Samsung has announced that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is coming to the Galaxy S II smartphone on March 15 for select users. The news comes courtesy of a post on the company’s Mobile Israel Facebook page which seemingly solidifies rumors of a March release that we have been hearing so much about.

Android Central has a rough translation that reads as follows.

We promised we were working on it. You waited patiently. And on 15 March it'll arrive: Android version 4, ICS, to tens of thousands of GALAXY S II devices purchased from cellular companies in the country or directly from us. We are very excited for the launch, hope you are too :)

This is good news for Galaxy S II owners in Israel but it still may be some time before users in the US and other countries see an official update. It’s not uncommon for different telecom providers to carry slightly different hardware versions of the same phone or software overlays. This essentially means that different ROMs are required for each version of the handset.

On one hand, it’s nice that there are multiple options to choose from as a consumer but on the other hand, it significantly hampers the rollout time for OS updates.

A string of leaked ICS ROMs have found their way online and onto the rooted phones of customers for a few months but those looking for an official update will have to remain patient for a bit longer.

I have a Galaxy S II, but I bought it in Iran, will I be able to change the OS?
Is it free of charge?

Thank god for rooting and custom ROMs! I have been using ICS on my S5660 for a month now. :)

Yes, I agree. I put ICS on my Captivate awhile back... just recently though I flashed it back to stock rom, then upgraded to 2.3 update, whatever Kies updated me to.

I was getting random shutdowns throughout the day, some days it was consistant, other days none at all.

So... as this is great... there is a slight downfall... hope they got most the bugs worked out for the Galaxy II though. I bet they did.

Great to see they're rollin' em out as promised, but I've been running MIUIv4 ICS for months and it's rock solid.
With the active dev community, the SGS2 still has a long life ahead of it.

So, I looked up MIUIv4, and found a thread...

What doesn't work
MMS
Camera
Phone app FC's on first boot, but nothing after that
Themes
I'm sure you guys will find the others

I mean... maybe I took this out of context, but how can it be rock solid if its clearly stated that these options/functions do not work.

Can anyone clear that up for me?

Still waiting for ICS to roll out for my Droid RAZR... i could root but there aren't any fully operational 4.0 ROMs. At least to my knowledge...
