My niece asked me to look at a friend's computer... It was pretty clear there was a malware infection so I ran the 8 steps to ask for help from the experts to get it removed. Thx :)

Notes
MBAM
> Found infections asked to restart and reported all infections couldn't be removed

GMER
> The attached GMER log was run in Safe Mode
> GMER in Normal mode would BSOD sometime while scanning files on the C: drive (so it appeared to be done with Devices)
> The GMER scan in Safe Mode ended with a "scan is stopped" pop-up (sometime after I saw it was scanning files in C:\Windows). Is that the normal end message? (just curious....)

Nice to see you :)

There are some Norton's leftovers present.
Please, run Norton Removal Tool: http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN

====================================================================

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
    NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

Hmmm...... maybe a problem with ComboFix scan? If need be, can i just shutdown the machine and retry (probably tomorrow) Here's what i see / know / guess

1) I had installed Symantec pcAnywhere on this machine which is why you might see Symantec's Live Update stuff. Am pretty sure no Norton A/V is there. But can uninstall pcA as well if you like

2) I turned off McAfee all A/V related stuff before running combofix (i know, McAfee! Ughh.. But that's what the user's ISP supplies!)

3) Combofix installed Recovery Con and started the scan but that must have been a good 25-30+ minutes now
> I'll continue to let it run at least another 30 mins before trying to shutdown and retry tomorrow

Yippeeee!

Yippeee! :)
> Combofix ran in Safe Mode
> And, now, Windows "Turn Off" and "Restart" icons have started working again :)

/* edit */
ALSO: I now see the "Turn Off" Windows icon includes the option to turn off with/or without running pending Windows updates.
> just fyi.... I'm turning off without applying any pending Windows updates

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

Code:
File::
c:\windows\Frohalajoqibuzi.bin
c:\windows\Tmowu.dat

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Brad\Local Settings\Application Data\vsrxuqufu
c:\documents and settings\Brad\Local Settings\Application Data\llohsqkcq

Registry::

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\McAfeeAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\McAfeeFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=-

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs again, so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:

Looks good :)

How is computer running?

Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run [Vista users, go Start>"Start search"]
Type in:
Combofix /Uninstall
Note the space between the "Combofix" and the "/Uninstall"
Click OK (Vista users - press Enter).
Restart computer.

======================================================================

Download OTL to your Desktop.

* Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
* Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

netsvcs

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

* Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them back here.

How is computer running?

Happy to report that everything that was "broken" before seems to be well again now :)

Question
Before I had a chance to uninstall Combofix, Combofix must have triggered a McAfee A/V scan false positive. I saw a McAfee pop-up msg and Comboxfix was moved from the Desktop and to McAfee virus vault.
> Can I just delete everything in the vault? or anything else required to uninstall Combofix correctly??

Txt file Output
I tried copy/pasting the txt files into the post but they were too large so I attached them a txt files (just curious... Should they normally fit into a post?)

I'm glad to hear good news :)

Unfortunately, stupid McAfee sees Combofix as a thread. It seems like it'll never learn :(
We don't need Combofix anymore, so you empty the vault.

Should they normally fit into a post?
Grrrrr....this board limitations :(

7. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

8. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

9. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI). The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

10. Run defrag at your convenience.
