Sony has churned out another flagship smartphone for the Western world, and surprise, surprise, it looks very similar to the rest of the Xperia Z models that Sony has released over the past two or three years.

The new Xperia Z3+ is very similar to the Xperia Z4 that was announced for the Japanese market last month. In fact the only difference is in the name, reflecting the smartphone's incremental update over last year's Xperia Z3.

Internally, the Xperia Z3+ packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC, an upgrade over the Snapdragon 801 in the Xperia Z3. To make the phone marginally slimmer (6.9mm versus 7.3mm in last year's Z3), Sony has reduced the size of the battery by 200 mAh, resulting in a 2,900 mAh internal cell that also makes the phone lighter.

The Xperia Z3+ includes a 5.1-megapixel front-facing camera, an improvement over the previous 2.1-megapixel sensor. And for those that were constantly annoyed by the flaps around the Xperia Z3's waterproof body, the Xperia Z3+ has an exposed micro-USB port while retaining IP65/68 water resistance.

Most of the remaning Xperia Z3+'s specifications are the same as its predecessor, including the 5.2-inch 1080p IPS display, the 20.7-megapixel rear camera, and 3 GB of RAM.

There's no word yet on how much the Xperia Z3+ will cost but an educated guess would suggest it would match the Z3's price at launch. The Z3+ is set to be released globally in June alongside the Xperia Z4 Tablet.

Meh. I've got no interest in this thing, the Galaxy S6 has been released already and if I was in the market for a high end phone it would be my device of choice without a doubt.

Great thing about the Sony phones is they have amazing cameras, they're waterproof, and you can stream your PS4 to it. It's a nice looking phone too. Wish I wasn't on a CDMA cell network, otherwise I would probably get this one or the Z4 if it ever came to the US.

This is water resistant though.... and the S6 isn't. A shame, because the S5 was. If Sony would just put the power/USB connector at the bottom like normal folk I'd get it.

Using a Z3 here as my daily driver, excellent phone all around. It's gotten a bit cheaper since release so I bought a second one for the wife.

Same here Julio. When the camera died in my Nexus 5 I used the refund towards a Z3. Wife now has the Z3 compact. Great phones. Only downside is the lack of wireless charging but ended up getting the wireless charging case and plate. Now have old Maxell wireless charger beside my bed and the Sony one beside my computer.

Dealing with flaps was not an option for me either, so I take advantage of the magnetic charger. It's gone in the Z3+ due to the exposed USB connector, but for $30 the Xperia dock works pretty well. Those using protective cases (like my wife) can buy a magnetic charger cable instead and it works like the MacBook charger so again, no flaps to deal with (or to eventually damage) on a daily basis.

I'd bought the magnetic dock too, but found that with a case on it was awkward to put in place. That's been passed onto the wife :) I'd seen the magnetic cables and have been tempted to pick one up but many of the 3rd party cables had reviews stating they were poor quality or other problems. Do you know which brand of magnetic cable charger you bought?

What do you mean at the bottom? It's at the bottom
You are right... I had incorrectly assumed it was still on the left side. That is good news for me! I may replace my GS5 with this when I start to have issues with my current phone.

I'm not sure "capless" USB port is a good idea though. It is surely convenient but you won't be able to charge the phone after it has been recently exposed to liquid. This is one reason I love wireless charging, as you could still charge it right after it has been exposed to liquid.
