Speakers buzz when touching the audio plug. Solution?

When you say upgraded his pc, what parts and components did you upgrade ?
Also his specs would help out alot so we can know what we're dealing with.
Ask your friend to take his speaker-subwoofer setup with that cord.

Plug it into a smart phone or some other device that will use 3.5mm port and see what happens.
If it buzzes on other devices, its a direct problem with the cord.
If it does not buzz or make any static or crackling noise whatsoever.
The problem will fall back directly to his mobo, you need to buy a new cord and test that out
Thx for the reply.

You can ignore the PC since the speakers buzz even when the only thing touching the audio plug is your finger or another device (I brought the PC back home with me and his speakers would still buzz it he touched the audio plug after turning on the subwoofer), so the computer is irrelevant (though if you still must know, I upgraded his motherboard, Ryzen cpu & memory. A full Platform upgrade.)

As mentioned above, we tried a different audio cable, and even plugging the subwoofer in another room. Neither made any difference.

We can close this case though b/c the problem mysteriously disappeared on it's own. I brought the PC back to his house after testing it from home with no issues. We reconnected everything except the audio & Ethernet, waited until the computer fully booted before plugging in the audio and there was no buzz. Even after shutting down & rebooting, the buzz did not return. We were able to reconnect the Ethernet as well.

I don't know why we got the loud buzz initially, but waiting until the PC was running before plugging everything back in seems to have resolved the issue. I have no idea why.

Thx.

If you plugged the speaker into ANYTHING it would buzz (loudly). If anything touched the audio plug, it would buzz.
Please pardon my ignorance, but what I'm wanting to know is once plugged IN, does it still buzz/hum? If so, I give up. If not, I see no problem.
IF I unplug my green plug from my pc/laptop & touch the metal part,it does buzz/hum, otherwise it does not.

Everyone who has said that the speakers will buzz when touching the center conductor is correct. That is a sign of a high-impedence input. If I unplug my powered subwoofer from my receiver and touch the center conductor, it will buzz. That is completely normal.

What is not normal is having it buzz when plugged into the computer. That should not happen. One possibility is that the plug is not all the way into the jack.

If you or your friend has an MP3 player with a 1/8" 3-conductor jack, try plugging the speakers into that. If you get a buzz even when the player is off, I suggest returning the speakers, if possible, and find something else. If there is no buzz when plugged into a player like that when the player is off, but there is a buzz when you turn on the player and/or start playing music, I also suggest returning the speakers and getting something else. If you get the buzz in either of these cases, there is likely something wrong with the speakers.

And if you do not get the buzz in either of these cases, then there is something wrong with the motherboard's connector.

IMO, the equipment is malfunctioning at the very least and poorly designed.

Please consider it solved then, it may not be fixable, I'm not the techie others in here are, but as long as its not buzzing/humming, be happy :) Good luck.
