Speech recognition not working in Windows 7

I'm trying to get Speech Recognition working so I can help my dad take inventory at his bookstore.

The voice commands work fine in the mic setup wizard, but no other time. I've been trying for about an hour.

I'm assuming that curvy thing between the round mic icon and the word "Listening" is a volume meter. It shows no activity.

My laptop has a preamped mic connected to the line input, and there's a broken stereo mic in the lid. I've used the Recording Devices tab in Sound Settings to choose the external mic, and it works fine for recording into Audacity.

I'm out of ideas.
Thanks

what type of commands are you giving ???
go to control panel/ease of access/speech recognition and take the speech tutorial make sure once more that your microphone is configured . then tell if the problem persists .
also if you can please change your microphone to test .

Is there some program connected to Speech Recognition that needs to run? That would explain why it only works in setup and tutorial.
