It wasn’t long after finalizing its $48.5 billion acquisition of DirecTV that AT&T started offering bundle discounts and other rewards to its customers. That much was expected but what we didn’t see coming – at least, not right away – was other wireless providers celebrating the merger.

And by celebrating the merger, I mean offering deals to existing DirecTV customers that might be hard to pass up.

Starting today and running through September 30, Sprint is offering DirecTV subscribers a free year of wireless service that includes unlimited talk, text and 2GB of data. The offer is designed to compete directly with a somewhat similar offering from AT&T in which DirecTV customers get $500 in credits for each line they transfer to AT&T (assuming of course they aren’t already AT&T wireless subscribers).

DirecTV customers switching to Sprint or existing Sprint customers adding an additional line need only pay a $36 activation fee per line. The offer is extended to those signing up through Sprint Lease, iPhone Forever, Spring Easy Pay or anyone that pays the full retail price for a smartphone.

Once the free year has expired, customers will automatically be moved to what Sprint calls a “competitive” rate-per-line plan for unlimited talk, text and 2GB of data.

Anyone interested in taking Sprint up on the offer need only upload a recent DirecTV bill to get the ball rolling.
