Subaru vulnerability exposed millions of cars to remote hacking and tracking

If you take it to a dealer for servicing - it’s connected…. And if you bought it from a dealer - it’s connected… and that’s how most people buy new cars…
Unless you directly instruct them not too. You own the car and they are required by law to respect your wishes about it's configuration. It is an actual crime for them to alter it without your consent.

Except THEY wouldn't be modifying it - YOU would be... it COMES connected... and they will probably tell you that if it's not connected, the warranty is void...

You clearly do not live in the US. You can stop now, You have no idea what you're taking about.

I live in Canada - but I know plenty of people who live in the US and buy cars... And when you buy a new car from the dealer, by default, they are "connected". You can then choose to set it up with your personal account, pair your phone, etc...

When you get it serviced, they connect your car to their network for diagnosis, etc...

Please, let me know where I've "gone wrong" and "have no idea what I'm talking about"...

All buyers have the option to have the car disconnected. It's not something a dealership can refuse.

They can also plug in using the port under the dash, which ALL vehicles sold in the US have.

Ok, you said,
and they will probably tell you that if it's not connected, the warranty is void...
Which isn't just crazy, but also blatantly unlawful.

So yeah, you have no idea what you're talking about.

Yeah... I'd like you to read this...

and this...

and then maybe this...

While some cars allow you to actually modify the car itself - remove SIM cards or disable antennas - most won't let you disconnect from the internet at all. You CAN opt out of data collection (not the same thing) - but only with some companies - and then you'd have to trust that they're actually not collecting your data...

I'd love a source to the law that says they MUST disconnect you if you ask... please share...

Telemetry is more and more build in into anything that uses internet. Even your (I)phone. Those things are constantly gathering, collecting and submitting data.

If your a car manufactor, and you want to sell in EU or US, there's laws you have to comply to. One of them is obviously emission, sound, consumption and all that, but more and more insurance company's are pushing for logging or tracking.

Logging could be beneficial in the identification of a crash. What was the drivers speed? What was the moment of the steering angle? Was the brake pressed in? That sort of data. But there will always be folks who would like to monetize any feature provided in car.

I mean a engine does not need a full SOC to run; it can be done by a simple ECU with in there timing and moment of ignition at % given throttle.

That's an impressive write-up. It was trivial to permanently disconnect my car from the internet. It was done in a reversible way, but it does not complain.

You “permanently “ did something that was “reversible “… now I understand why arguing with you is pointless!

Do yourself a favour and look up the definition of both of those words before posting again maybe?

"You can retrieve at least a year's worth of location history for the car, where it's pinged precisely"

No, you cannot.

Not if one owns a car from the 2000's or older.

What do you need a car with an onboard PC for anyway?
Auto manufacturers are adding standard features whether we need them or not, to justify higher prices.

That was pedantic. The radio module was removed. Thus a permanent disconnection that the vehicle can not re-enable. But plugging the module back in reverses the condition. How did you miss that functionality on a website focused on PC tech?? Granted, not all vehicles are like this, but I did my homework.

Yeah... removing the radio unit is not something that can be done by the average car owner - and I'm pretty sure you can't insist your dealer do it for you either...

Don't really care about your misinformed opinions.
Yet you keep posting… I keep asking for proof and you supply nothing - yet say I don’t know what I’m saying when I provided evidence…

Me thinks thou dost protest too much….

Evidence? You think a Reddit link and a few news articles are evidence? LOL! Weak. You are right about one thing. Bye.

Had you READ them, you'd have noticed they had links embedded as well... and... they still beat the ZERO evidence you provided for your slanderous "I don't know what I'm talking about" - still awaiting some...
