Inactive System-check got to my laptop

Do you have Windows XP CD?

Do you have a lot of important data on your computer?

I don't have a XP CD. The computer is a loaner from my wifes school. She primarily uses it for internet access and making new documents. She says there is nothing on there that she can't live without. She wanted me to try to fix it because the school districts tech guy has a 2 week backlog.

I'm afraid we're out of options here.
Possibly your wife can acquire Windows CD from that guy?

Unfortunately I was unable to obtain an XP CD. My wife took the laptop into work today for the tech dept. to fix. Thank you for your help. It is much appreciated. How does malware like that infect a computer? The laptop only ran on my wireless internet. Could the router security setting be too weak? Thanks again for your time and patience.

It was strange. It acted up one night and I thought nothing of it. The next day it did the same and I tried to run ReImage on it and that is when it went downhill fast. We had it at home for three weeks and then all of the sudden it started acting up. All we did was check our emails on it and maybe checked CL and eBay every now and then.

There is really no way to say where the infection came from.
Previous user and then you used infected image?

What would you recommend as the best anti-malware and anti-spyware programs. I bought the Malwarebytes a while back for my desktop. Is there something else I should have for better protection?

P.S. By the way, My wife just called and said they are just going reload XP onto the laptop. What are the first steps I should take to secure it and prevent this from happening again?
