The Best Storage: SSD, HDD, NAS & More

I believe you are in the minority on that one. WD hard drives are widely regarded as some of the best, if not the best. Reliability has been proven over the years to be second to none and performance is also excellent. I am yet to have a WD Red or Black drive die and I have dozens of them, meanwhile I have lost count of the number of Seagate and Samsung 'Hard Drives' that have died on me.
WD 3 and 4 GB drives fail regularly, while the 1 and 2 gbs are just fine.

I have had 12 WD 3TB drives in service for a little of 2 years now, not a single failure and I have 8 WD 4TB models that we use for testing, still not a single failure.

I am surprised about the QNAP recommendation. I would of thought the top spot would have been taken by one of Synology's offerings. I know they aren't cheap but the OS is second to none and hardware is great too (slightly expensive though).

I'm looking forward to seeing the prices of the 960 Evo line though. Thanks for the interesting read :)

QNAP and Synology are really on par now in terms of software/OS. QNAP offers a broader range however and in my opinion have edged ahead on features offered.

TS-451A reviews on Amazon are not kind. Issues with transcode, setup, RAM compatibility, external web routing, etc.

Really? I must be looking at a different Amazon. I only see 8 reviews and the majority are very positive, as they should be the TS-451A is a great NAS. I have not had issues with any of the things you mentioned by the way.

FWIW, The 2-4 bay Synology NAS's definitely have better reviews than 2-4 bay QNAP on Amazon. The QNAP OS definitely seems to frustrate a much larger fraction of people. One thing that puzzles me in the NAS war is the frequent lack of mention of Asustor units. The reviews I've seen have all been very positive, and even the Techspot review of the DS-216+ includes test data that shows the AS-6202T equaling or perhaps even surpassing the DS-216+ in performance.

A review I read based on data collected from server farms indicates that HGST has the best larger capacity drives (3tb and up). WD apparently comes in second, but I also believe HGST are made by WD, but I could be wrong.

Asustor is very good. However they are basically a direct copy of the QNAP NAS, I am not sure if they licensed the software and hardware design from QNAP but they are virtually identical and have been since day one. QNAP has better support and a broader range though. There is nothing wrong with the QNAP software, today it is every bit as good as Synologys.

Best Performance SSD Samsung SSD 960 Pro?

I've made retest again with the time and date stamp and is near same results as before: It's looks like Samsung 850 Evo 500GB Rapid Mode is outperform Samsung 950 Pro 256GB M.2 PCI-e 3.0 x 4 NVMe.
