If you’ve played either of Supergiant Games’ previous titles - Bastion and Transistor – you’ll know that it has a reputation for creating beautifully atmospheric games with vivid art styles that place an emphasis on audio design. Now, the San Jose-based company has revealed its third game, Pyre, which looks and sounds just amazing its previous efforts.

Pyre is a “party-based role-playing game” that’s set to be released on the PC and PS4 in 2017. It's set in Purgatory, where players “lead a band of exiles through an ancient competition,” according to Supergiant Games.

At the beginning of the game, your luck has almost run out when several masked wanderers find you and revive you from the brink. With your help, they seek to learn the truth about the Rites, a secretive competition through which the worthiest exiles can return home, absolved of their transgressions.

Precise details regarding Pyre’s game mechanics haven’t been revealed. The trailer shows that it sticks with the same isometric viewpoint as Supergiant’s previous titles, but it’s unclear whether it uses Bastion’s real-time battles or mixes in turn-based elements like Transistor.

While the developer refers to Pyre’s combat as fast and action packed, it’s interesting that the game is the only one on Supergiant’s website that is described as an “RPG” rather than an “action RPG.”

“Gameplay [...] combines expressive decision making on the world map with fast, action-packed confrontations against rival groups of exiles whose own freedom is at stake,” writes the developer.

Anyone going to PAX East this weekend will be able to find out more about Pyre, where it will be publicly playable for the first time.
