The Oblivion remake is real, it's gorgeous, and it's out now

I've been playing it. Many hours in and it's all coming back. Stutters and performance issues here and there but that will get sorted.

The game feels identical to the original but they have tidied up plenty of the problems, particularly the levelling system.

I'm looking forward to see if the modding scene can make use of unreal.
Biggest «bug» I’ve seen so far is when I load into areas with a lot of npc’s in a small space. There seems to be a problem with the «distance to npc conversation trigger», basically ALL npcs were talking at the same time which made it impossible to listen in on any of the various chatter as I was overwhelmed by 6-7 audio tracks

Good, but where are new good games made with passion by the people who love making games rather than statements?

I've seen this too. And all npcs can spawn in the same spot when you load into a smaller area. I think the unpatched original game occasionally has the same problem.
Nostalgia glasses are firmly glued to my face and I love the jank.

My biggest problem is playing on Game Pass with Steam open duplicates controller inputs so you have to turn steam off.

I wonder if any of the older mods will still work, if the characters are still upper/lower design...

As always, the devil's in de tails
It's a different engine (latest unreal engine with all bells and whistles) and from the looks of it the old mods might be a downgrade.

Its a lot of fun and looks great!

Huge improvement over the original. They did a great job modernizing it.

Massive Visual Overhaul:

  • Unreal Engine 5: The game has been rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, leading to a drastically more detailed visual experience.
  • Completely Redone Assets: Every single asset, including character models, environments (landscapes, dungeons), and items, has been redesigned from scratch with new, higher-quality models and textures.
  • Enhanced Lighting: A new real-time lighting system with dynamic shadows makes the world more atmospheric and realistic, changing based on the time of day and weather.
  • Improved Weather Effects: Rain, snow, and other weather conditions are visually more impressive.
  • New Spell and Magic Animations: Expect more flashy and detailed visual effects for spells.
  • Reworked Lip-Sync: New lip-sync technology makes NPC dialogue more believable.

  • Improved Draw Distance: You'll be able to see much further into the horizon, creating a more expansive world.
  • Updated Third-Person Camera and Controls: Third-person view is now more viable with an adjustable FOV, two camera settings, and independent character movement (like Skyrim and Starfield).
Gameplay Enhancements & Changes:

  • Sprinting: A much-requested feature finally added, allowing you to move faster at the cost of stamina.

  • Improved Stealth: The stealth system is more informative and responsive, similar to Skyrim's, with a detection status indicator.

  • Modernized UI: The user interface has been updated to be more in line with contemporary gaming standards, with improved menus, inventory management, and a more informative HUD.
  • Compass Improvements: The compass now shows your current location and the distance to map markers.
  • Reworked Difficulty System: Instead of a vague slider, there are now five distinct difficulty presets.
  • New Character Creation: The character creator features completely new models and offers a wider range of customization options, including separate body types and origins that slightly affect starting attributes.
  • Grab Mechanic Update: Picking up items is now a long press, and the item sticks to the cursor instead of being physically forced.
New Content & Quality of Life:

  • All DLC Included: The standard edition includes both major expansions (Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine) and all previously released DLC.
  • New Deluxe Edition Content: The Deluxe Edition includes bonus quests and unique Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon armor and weapon sets, as well as horse armor (yes, it's back!).
  • Newly Recorded Dialogue: Many NPCs now have new voice lines, and some races have new voice actors, adding more variety.
  • Additional Autosaves: The game now autosaves on any loading screen.
  • Improved Map: The world map has better clarity with more noticeable icons, and you can filter locations by type.
  • Smaller Plant Pickups: Picking up ingredients is now easier with larger activator volumes.
  • Visual Tweaks: Animated plant pickups, beards and mustaches for characters, and all eye types available for all races.
  • Bug Fixes: Numerous bugs from the original game have been addressed (like the scroll duplication glitch and the Mystic Emporium bug).

Actually they haven't rebuilt the engine at all - It's the exact same engine with the Unreal 5 engine on top, which means pathing, the jankyness etc. is still fully intact. It's a brilliant remaster, but it IS the old Oblivion as well. Probably the best solution as new players will get the same experience in a new dressing

Skyblivion caught off-guard. Taking too long and now too late. No one will play both
This remake is pretty heavy graphics wise. Skyblivion should just be running on Skyrim's engine, so that should be lots easier to run for those with older rigs still. I think it'll definitely have an audience. I'm having a pretty good time with the remake so far, but I do want to check that out when it comes out just to see how different they are.

@Squid Surprise Shame! That was obviously an all-original, fully typed-out post.
Well, I caved and bought the deluxe version... Horse armor aside (yes, they have it!!), the extra stuff is NOT just cosmetic... the Mehrune "set" involves a fairly decent note quest (follow the notes left on various trees/barrels/etc) where you have to earn a new spell - make sure to do this before the Knights of Nine quest as you will have to kill an innocent (kind of innocent - it's an imperial soldier in a cage).
Haven't done the Akatosh one yet, but I assume it will be similar (except not killing any innocents). The actual set you get isn't as good as the Crusader Relics you get from the Knights quest - let alone the best stuff from Shivering Isles... but still looks cool... and it's unenchanted so you can use those sigil stones to make it useful :)
