Xbox Support agent accidentally dishes on Oblivion remaster, may launch in four days

Well, it's officially out - 120+GB download... $50 USD ($66.99 CAD) and even more for the "Deluxe Version" that gives you "unique items" with some new quests...

Even though this feels like a scam, I naturally fell for it anyways... you can "upgrade" to Deluxe for the same difference in price, so have gone "vanilla" for now - it still includes all the original DLCs like Shivering Isle, Knights of the Nine, etc - and yes, Horse Armor!

I feel like I'm probably either going to be lost to gaming for the next 100 hours... or angry as h3ll in about 20 minutes...

Let me know what you think.

So far it’s quite similar… longer loading times - and I’ve got PCIe 5.0 SSD and Threadripper 7980x… and 256gb of RAM…

The default controls are mostly the same but they swapped E and Spacebar (I switched them back). However, spacebar “activate” isn’t as responsive as it was in OG version. (I tried swapping back but still not as responsive - requires a double-tap fairly often).

The former DLCs are more seamless - Frostcrag doesn’t just pop up with a message when you leave the sewers - you have to go to the city closest and talk to someone to get the map marker… and I actually had to pick the lock instead of just magically having the key…

Map viewing is closer to Skyrim - gonna take me some getting used to, but I have to admit it is a bit easier - or it will be once I get the hang of it.

Worth the $50 or wait for a sale?

I’ve seen it going for like 41/42 at various discount sites… if you’re an oblivion junky, worth it… and I am :)
I'm not an Oblivion junky, but this is a fantastic game. You guys are likely better judges, but this looks to be the king of remasters graphically. This is not the just increase resolution, and add some lighting remasters of the past few games I have seen.
Just the overall immersion is off the charts.
So yeah, this is already my go-to game for the foreseeable future.

I have it through Gamepass. It has the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions, but I'm sure I will want the additional content, and I don't know how that is going to be handled, but I thought that should be mentioned.

I think you can pay $10 to get the extra content (it’s like 2 sets of items with corresponding quests)… you can for Steam and I assume they’d make it the same for Xbox / PS5…

OK I'll give it a go some time over the next few days... I just hope we can continue to mod it...

Its a good buy. I think most folks universally are praising it.

I spent a good 4 hours in it last night and its very well done. It has modernized Oblivion and its well done!

I have roughly 100 hours in the original. I know amateur numbers but point being, I have played the original for comparison.

The Skyrim modding scene is stronger now then ever. The innovations keep coming. To me, the biggest two questions on this new Oblivion remaster:

1) How moddable will it be? As in Nexus and a mod manager.

2) More importantly, what will this mean for the Skyblivion project? This is a little different than when Fallout: London was about to come out and Bethesda kinda messed them up by surprise releasing a Fallout 4 next-gen update. I would hope Beth would work WITH these teams, but they do their own thing. At least, they have been less evil to the modding community than other studios. I hope they don't take surprise action against the Skyblivion team, passively or actively.
Bethesda gave the skyblivion team free copies of the new remastered edition and stated they have no plans or desire to shut their project down. Good on them!

So, did some research last night..
Modding is not officially supported, HOWEVER, that has not stopped the modding scene (see Nexus) getting ito it already....
The Engine underneath is the Oblivion Game Engine but they now have Unreal Engine 5 for the graphics lighting etc... So because the engine is the original type, there is a lot of hope for modding. Of note is the Script Extender... they've temporarily released the old Script Extender with some quick adjustements for Oblivion Remastered, but there is confirmation online there will be a completely redone Script Extrender released as fast as possible.
Already there are a number of minor (but in my opinion necessary) mods out, such as Carry Weight Adjuster and Achievement Enabler (for those modding a steam install and want to get the achievements still, which modding tends to block)
Great to see such positive reviews around the Web and Steam players seem to agree, rocketting to the top of the charts...

And it turns out you are right. They don't have the upgrade in the Xbox app but can be upgraded within the game. The extra content seems pretty unnecessary, though. But I haven't really taken a close look at it yet.

Yeah, that is true, the moding scene is doing a lot despite it not being officially supported.

And I was a sucker and bought it... quests are decent... just completed the Akatosh one (did the Mehrunes one earlier)... basically you need to clear an old Ayelid ruin and kill a boss lich... Mehrunes you have to help Mythic Dawn guys kill an imperial soldier (you can salve your conscience by slaughtering them after you get the spell).

Rewards are a full set of armor and weapons which you can get an inexhaustible supply of (Mehrunes one you get a spell that summons a Daedra who gives them to you - Akatosh you need to travel to Kvatch every time to get from a priest).
