Trouble with running Oblivion on Vista

I am having trouble running Oblivion on Windows Vista. My computer is definitely fast enough to run it, but whenever I go to start a new game, it freezes and I have to open task manager to close it. Has anybody else had this issue? If so, how might I fix this?

Your RAM is probably key to resolving this problem... The fact that it is an unknown type raises red flags. Tell us more.
