What just happened? Donald Trump has announced that tech titans OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank are joining forces on a colossal $500 billion initiative dubbed "Project Stargate." According to the US president, the goal is to secure AI compute in the country and gain an edge against China, which has been rapidly advancing its own AI ambitions.

At a White House press conference, Trump was flanked by the companies' top brass as he hyped up Stargate by proclaiming that it will cement the future of technology in the US while creating over 100,000 new jobs.

The project's plan is for OpenAI, Oracle, and Japanese conglomerate SoftBank to plow an initial $100 billion into data center infrastructure across the country. This will balloon to a mind-boggling total investment of half a trillion dollars over the next four years. Big names like Arm, Microsoft, and Nvidia are also listed as technology partners.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said at the conference that it's already begun building 10 data centers measuring half a million square feet each in Texas. But details are still hazy on where the next facilities will pop up.

Ellison added that the project will include the construction of the largest computer ever built. This could be used to invent cancer vaccines and help prevent Covid-19-like pandemics.

Not everyone seems enthusiastic about the announcement, though. Pushing back against the Stargate hype is none other than Elon Musk, who fired shots at the funding claims.

"They don't actually have the money," Musk argued on X, saying SoftBank has under $10 billion truly locked in – based on his intel.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman quickly clapped back under the same post, taunting Musk to "come visit the first site" and accusing him of putting his own companies' interests over those of the US. The two tech billionaires have been engaged in an increasingly bitter legal battle over OpenAI, which Musk was an early investor in before exiting.

However, serious questions remain around AI's impact on jobs, safety risks, and more. Trump has already axed some of the Biden-era guardrails around AI and experts are warning that a lack of regulation could have major consequences as capabilities rapidly advance.

There's been some buzz that the Stargate project is OpenAI's attempt to reduce its reliance on Microsoft by investing in dedicated AI infrastructure. But in its blog post, OpenAI appears to shut down that speculation, mentioning that the initiative actually builds on their existing partnership.

The company says that it will "continue to increase its consumption of Azure as OpenAI continues its work with Microsoft with this additional compute to train leading models and deliver great products and services."

Can't wait for the Stargate AI to be given access to the NSA "we record everything" data records and from there to automatically determine which citizens should be summarily jailed, or just denied jobs, or loans, or airline boarding, or maybe just be referred for a low social credit investigation. I hope the AI at least gets good at fixing its own bugs.

Grifters gonna Grift
Plain and simple. Scam!!!!

Got to pay back those struggling billionaires with sweet fat juicy contracts - with no oversight from Musk Doge Dept

You could fund it by stealing from the 3 trillion social benefit fund the grunts have paid into - so much savings to be made cutting pensions , medical , etc . Plus unlike social welfare USA can use tax reduction on Billionaires to fund it like last time - Oh yeah more debt to pay billionaires

I predict 50% chance they will find away to steal your welfare funds, Corporations already stole pensions funds to reward CEO/Directors and shareholders

Thats the scary part. What do you think is going to happen with all the money from the programs Trump plans on cutting?
Its going right into his greedy little (very little) pockets.
I wouldn't call what Trump does or announces as a "success"
Every time he opens his mouth he makes himself look stupid, which isn't hard to do.
And makes America look like the new Nazi Germany.
Your okay with that?????

I came here for the comments really!

Who called it Stargate? 🙉

It just occurred to me that a techspot writer should author an article rating every Hollywood movie US president vs Trump 😂

As long as that $500,000,000,000 is coming from those companies (and not tax payers) that's great. As far as I can tell, this is a tech giant thing that they are letting Trump announce / claim credit for so he's happy.

Trump said while signing executive orders that this will not be funded by taxpayer money. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen if that's even possible but he clarified, nevertheless. So stop spreading false information/believing it's funded by taxpayer money until you see differently with your own eyes.

So can we all say the same thing about people that believe tRUMP, regardless of the literally thousands of things he said that were bullshit?

Yeah, but where is the money coming to the companies?? Its coming from us !

Who will pay the salaries of the government employees tasked with coordinating and... actually executing said executive orders - the office that will be created to interface between the project and the government?

You think the prez is personally going to get on the phone to negotiate the zoning and permitting?

For every 10 things that Trump could announce only 1% comes to success or even come through.
Since 1% of 10 is 0.1, IMO, that is being generous.

As far as what he has done already, he already lied on his campaign promise of considering every J6er case individually. Of course, he justified what he did on the basis of the 2020 election being stolen from him. At least he consistently repeats the same stuff even if there is no truth to it.

Honestly, I'll be surprised if he keeps more than 1% of his campaign promises. Many of those promises, IMO, are things that no US president has the power to do whether it's by executive order or any other means.

As I see it, he's living in ancient US history and thinks, mistakenly, it applies to the US today especially where Tariffs are concerned.

Given that 50.4% of the US electorate did not vote for him, I think it is safe to say that the answer to your "Your okay with that?" question is No, a majority of Americans are not OK with that.

This time around, it appears that there are more people from within "his" party that are willing to openly challenge him. IMO, he's going to have to tread very carefully lest he find himself being impeached by his own party.

In reference to him being impeached by his own party, he is obviously starting out his administration with the mistaken impression that he can do anything he damn well pleases and lawsuits/court orders are outright telling him that he is mistaken. That "I can do anything I damn well please" attitude has, IMO, a high probability of alienating him from those who might be supporting him now. People will only take so much crap before they rebel.

Wow, the world's most powerful AI infrastructure at the disposal of the world's greatest megalomaniac and grifter. (Other than Elon Musk).

What else could be said of that but, "Hail, Big Brother..!"

And there's even more campaign promise lies. During his campaign, he tried to distance himself from "Project 2025," yet his flurry of EOs the past two weeks are following, guess what, Project 2025.

Trump really ought to admit to the nation "I cannot tell the truth." I'm sure that would confuse people, however, since there are some that still believe him.

He's completely off the rails. Now he's saying that the air crash was Biden and Obama's fault. The courts are blocking his EOs as fast as he can sign them.
