UK brings back plans for porn site age verification checks using passports, credit cards

A hot potato: A controversial UK scheme that requires porn sites to legally verify the age of visitors using passports, credit cards, and other means is being resurrected. The original system was scrapped back in 2019, just weeks before it was set to be implemented.

To mark Safer Internet Day, UK digital minister Chris Philip announced that the Online Safety Bill would be updated with a section requiring all sites that publish pornography, not just those with user-generated content (I.e. OnlyFans), to put “robust” checks in place ensuring visitors are over 18.

Rather than using a pop-up that asks “are you over 18?” which is about as far as most porn platforms go when verifying ages, it’s suggested that “secure age verification technology” is used to confirm visitors have a credit card.

A user’s age could also be confirmed by checking their details held by a mobile provider. Another suggestion is to use a third-party service that checks someone’s date of birth against government-held data such as passport information. "The onus will be on the companies themselves to decide how to comply with their new legal duty," the government said.

Any sites failing to implement the age verification checks could be fined 10% of their annual worldwide turnover or be blocked in the UK. As before, we can expect VPN uptake to suddenly increase in the country. Check out some of our favorites in this Essential Apps Guide.

As was the case previously, the law is primarily designed to protect children from accessing pornography online, but it comes with numerous privacy and security concerns, not only from hackers but also from the fear that someone’s porn viewing habits could be associated with their identity. Those reasons, along with technical challenges, are believed to have been why the government abandoned the plans three years ago.

There is a side to this we arent looking at, wouldn't you find it annoying to verify your age everytime you want to wrestled with snakes? Also, verifying your age means verifying your identity, there is a reason the joke "delete my browser history" exists.

I'm not trying to be some huge privacy advocate here, but I don't think anyone wants verified records of whatever they're watching.

TERF Island is back at it again except now it's not just trying to meddle in the life of trans folk but well, the entire adult population.

What a sad, sexless, puritan country you've got over there.

How are they going to stop ALL the different VPNs people can use? China can't even stop all of them.

Men try to erase women by claiming they are women then scream sexism. What a patriarchal act.

As someone from the UK. What isn't apparent is I don't think this will go anywhere. This is one of those eye catching stories to take everyone's eyes on the news.

There are so many other more concerning things going on in this country at the moment frankly this is just as Boris Johnson said - give news so many stories as chaff so you can just carry on and bomb your intended target.

The fact you are calling the UK Puritan shows a lack of knowledge about the subject honestly.

I can guarantee without knowing what country you are from that you have some of the same issues everyone does.

I get there's a difference between the general public and the government and "opinion leaders" and such so I'll gladly make those distinction because no I don't think *everyone* in the UK behaves like that.

Just you know...The folks making law and decisions which is kind of a big deal but yeah, it's a political problem.

First and foremost, children do not belong to the state, they belong to their parents.

And secondly, sex is not only not harmful, but is also the cause of their existence. It may be a shock to a child for the first time but the same shock is if the child lives in the mountains and sees the sea for the first time. It's just a shock, nothing more.

There are other really harmful factors for children such as sugar in soft drinks.

As always, the teens seeking workarounds will always be miles ahead of the luddite adults who want to try to impose technical parental controls on them.

And if those workarounds require lists of passport and credit card identities, that is exactly what will be generated, to the delight of adult criminals and misfortune of everyone else.

For a just as practical idea, let's start with having all lawmakers required to pass a degree-level course of Laws of Unintended Consequences.

I'm not big on conspiracy theories... But... (lol but) it seems all the western countries (Canada, USA, UK, Australia) are bringing out heaps of policies affecting the internet in general.
It's like they all have the same agenda without knowing it...

I for one would rather less government control. So much for freedom when you can't take a piss without the Gov wanting a cut or someone to pay.

But hey, I guess all those that have been scare mongered all these years into giving up freedoms for safety feel pretty safe right now...

I suspect the blocking method will be DNS blocking only for most ISPs, so horny Brits won't even need a VPN in most cases, but just changing their default Domain Name Server to one overseas.

The ISPs will want to do the minimum that complies with the legislation while costing them the least money.

Many kids will have an older sibling who's credit card they can borrow, or steal Mom's or Dad's when the parent isn't looking.

Given the number of perverts and adulterers in the Tory party, this is the biggest hypocritical farce in history. Do as we say, not as we do much worse. Got to hate these holier than thou a$$holes hiding under the guise of public decency. Australia full of the same sort of political bilge too.
