Warm skin, eye contact, and microexpressions: world's first "biomimetic AI robot" revealed

WTF?! The sci-fi trope of humanoid robots that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing has moved a lot closer to reality. China has revealed what is dubbed the first "biomimetic AI robot," which walks almost exactly like a real person, can replicate human expressions, makes eye contact, and even has warm skin.

Robotics company DroidUp (also known as Zhuoyide) revealed the robot, named Moya, at Shanghai's Zhangjiang Robotics Valley.

Shanghai Eye, part of the Shanghai Media Group, took a look at Moya in the video below. The presenter highlights how cameras behind the robot's eyes allow it to look and interact with people, and that its skin, body temperature, and muscles are much more human-like than previous similar machines.

A DroidUp spokesperson said Moya is based on a modular bionic platform architecture that can be configured with different gender characteristics and appearances.

The robot's highly customizable bionic head can replicate a range of microexpressions, from joy and (concerningly) anger to sorrow and happiness.

In addition to the AI features that allow Moya to perceive and react to its surroundings, a lot of attention has focused on the robot's walk. DroidUp says its creation's walking posture has an accuracy rate of 92%. It still has some of the jerkiness seen in previous humanoid bots, but we're getting worryingly close to a lifelike replica.

Moya's other stats include a 5-foot 5-inch height and 70-pound weight, but the most human feature could be the warm skin. DroidUp says Moya maintains a body temperature of 32 to 36 degrees Celsius (89.6°F to 96.8°F).

There's little doubt that the realism and warm skin especially are going to bring questions about whether this robot is akin to Futurama's Lucy Liubot (I.e., a sexbot). Li Qingdu, founder of DroidUp, did little to dispel this perception.

"A robot that truly serves human life should be warm [...] almost like a living being that people can connect with," he said, though that statement could be taken several ways.

DroidUp envisions Moya as more than just a domestic robot. SCMP writes that the company has ambitions for Moya to be used in healthcare, education, and other commercial environments that could involve human-robot interaction.

If you're interested in Moya for what are hopefully non-lurid reasons, the robot is expected to launch by the end of 2026. It's not cheap, either: 1.2 million yuan, or around $173,000.

No person would mistake or think that thing is "indistinguishable from the real thing". This is a product that is useless in factories, as it doesn't need to look or act like a person and will fail in the consumer market, as men can't have sex with it. Until one or both of these are solved, this is simply a pipe dream product category.

A 92% accurate human walk is impressive, but that remaining 8% is doing psychological damage. That’s the part of your brain that goes this person is normal… wait no… nope absolutely not.

This robot could've looked like any person, but no, it had to have "that" look. Those engineers need get out of the lab more ;)

They have a very weird culture where it's even okay to do such pervy stuff by professional corporations like Samsung, Sony etc. it's mind blowing esp in this era of pervy gov leaks.

It's hard not to think that there's an agenda to normalize the extreme objectification of women, and shifting what's attractive from the natural everyday woman you can meet and marry versus the unobtainable digital/fake very underaged woman with several unhealthy products and surgeries.

I've got news for you. Women LOVE female objectification. It's the primary, and entirely natural source of their power. Attractive women have enormous power. Why do you think women spend so much time on clothing and makeup which is expressly designed to enhance and enlarge sexually relevant portions of their anatomy?

What women don't like is competition. An attractive robot could be very dangerous to feminine power. It breaks the female sexual monopoly. Prostitution does the same thing which is why it is banned or repressed in many cultures.

Discussions of female power invariably fail to address these simple truths. Which is why feminism was intellectually bankrupt from the very beginning.

A healthy society that honors and respects femininity as a special quality of women would have less need for artificial substitutes. But our society is intent on destroying femininity. Men want femininity. Since they can't get it from their women they will find it elsewhere. Hence the distorted, over sexualized female images in games.

We keep inching closer to the first Terminator! Did they make this one bullet proof too?

Purchase price plus maintenance, it’s never going to be better or cheaper than a real person for ‘adult fun’.

It’s a novelty at this stage, and novelty toys have had warm feel for years now, so I’m struggling to see a real use in the ‘adult fun’ area.

Maybe as a robot greeter in commercial use, but I’m not seeing it widely adopted.

I'm personally fine with a robot not looking like a human. Probably from watching too much sci fi growing up. As for the "warm" factor, I wonder if they are utilizing that as part of its cooling system.
I thought CPUs could be cooled by circulating fluid around through capillaries; perhaps even resulting in warm skin. But I still prefer cartoony heads and faces.

Hmmm. This reminds me of the Stepford Wives.

Surely you meant SOME women love objectification.

It's the primary, and entirely natural source of their power. Attractive women have enormous power.

That may be so. Wouldn't it be a sad indictment of the world if the 'primary source of power' for women is how attractive they can be to men, though? They have a lot more to offer than just that. More importantly, they may have entirely different ambitions.

Why do you think women spend so much time on clothing and makeup which is expressly designed to enhance and enlarge sexually relevant portions of their anatomy?

Yeah, why do some women do that? It sounds like you've got it all figured out!

What women don't like is competition. An attractive robot could be very dangerous to feminine power. It breaks the female sexual monopoly. Prostitution does the same thing which is why it is banned or repressed in many cultures.

What ought to be addressed is not these supposed 'simple truths' you believe in but rather the way in which you simply reduce all of womanhood to a monolithic block. Thereby demonstrating exactly why the development of feminism was both necessary and inevitable. You see, many women likely do not give a rat's *** about what you, me or other men may think of as natural, wonderful, appropriate or important to them. Their choice might happen to coincide with that, or it may not, but the only thing that matters is that the choice is their own, and we should all support the tearing down of every traditional barrier that stands in their way.

A healthy society that honors and respects femininity as a special quality of women would have less need for artificial substitutes. But our society is intent on destroying femininity. Men want femininity. Since they can't get it from their women they will find it elsewhere. Hence the distorted, over sexualized female images in games.

A healthy society would celebrate diversity including appreciation of a wider definition of femininity than the narrow one that is yours. Not casually blaming women for the ills caused by men not always getting what they want would be a start.

OF, the way they dress, all the makeup they plaster on their faces and modifications prove you wrong.

Go to east-Asia and you will see that it's only you people who see 'that' look.
