Weekend Open Forum: What's your take on the Xbox Scorpio and PlayStation Neo?

It's what they should have released in 2013.
What technology that didn't exist? If that's the case this is what should have been released a few thousand years ago. Maybe we should go back in time and give AMD schematics on creating the Zen and Polaris chips.

I think people who heard about this have been living under a rock. What happened to pc gaming? People game on their phone. Where's an article on pokemon go?

Serious gamers don't play children's games on their phones.

Facebook/farmville/cell phone gamers are not in the same class as console/PC gamers.

I personally think its great. If it comes at a good price point and I can trade in my current for PS4 to get a good deal im definitely getting one.

I'm still trying to figure out how consoles are going 4K when they struggle with 1080p. Consoles are great though, and I'm excited to see what happens.

yup, anyone think this hardware horsepower increase will really make these systems 4x as powerful? I mean, 4k is 4x 1080, and the current hardware isn't exactly owning 1080, so.....
plus it's too early, and frankly without exclusives(that just means they will program for the lowest tier, the old ps4) and something along the lines of 8-10x more power than what we have, I'm 100% sitting this one out. even then, I'd be pissed at the short lifespan of the ps4 and think about weening my kids and myself entirely off consoles. there are some pretty good pc options out there, and my pc does all sorts of other useful things besides gaming.
AFAIC, when the console makers decided to just use x86 pc components, they lost one of the two best things they had going for them. the ability to make weird quirky systems that could perform amazing feats if coded correctly. now they are just low powered PCs. you will now always be able to go out and roll your own far more powerful system.
Project Scorpio is going to have 6TFlops of GPU power by the way. To put that in perspective my stock OC'ed GTX970 sits at 4.1TFlops.

Don't care about 4k gaming, only got 1080p televisions at my house. I'd be happy if these new consoles could do better than my home built "Steam Machine" running on a GTX 970; the current generation doesn't come close. Because of the fact that some titles are not available through Steam (Halo, Gears, Destiny), is one reason I have a console in the first place. Dedicated Netflix / Hulu apps for Windows 7 would give me less reason to fire up the console too. It's a pain to surf the sites in a browser from the couch, easier to just use a console for those.
You know, downscaling does improve visual quality. 4K content downscaled to 1080p looks much better than 1080p content running at 1080p.

I haven't heard about either console until now, they're about as interesting as watching a scab form to me so if I came across a news article about them I would've just ignored it.

The 1070 has 6.5 TFlops which about .5 higher than the Project Scorpio projection.

Is a 1070 enough for 4k 60fps in all games right now?

Its already a known fact that console devs don't care about 60fps. Even if they lower the res a little to get it up to 60fps that is still an accomplishment.

Nither system will be powerful enough to pull off 4k. Not with a single GPU and 8 CPU cores.

What are these 'consoles' you speak of? Xbox? PlayStation? wut?

lol.. let me get out from under this rock and see what the fuss is all about. Personally, I am a PC Gamer, #PCMasterRace yes sir. But, I still like the direction the new console wars are taking with consoles now being x86-64 based architecture (XBone/PS4). I have not bought into the next-gen consoles yet, but I may just do that after they release. It's been a LONG while since I've touched a gamepad for a Xbox and/or PS.

I think they are focusing on 4k a bit early. At least with this an up-scaling they will be higher resolution than before.

I think it's great. The 10 year life cycle of previous consoles just couldn't keep up with technological innovations. Virtual/augmented reality anyone? Forget that on the old consoles. It's great for us PC owners cause it has raised the bar in terms of graphics standards. If an AMD 480 is the minimum graphics standard for these consoles, we should expect alot better graphics next year in games!:)

As of late the only reason I even use my PS4 anymore is for Madden. With all the money I put into my gaming PC I try to only support developers that put stuff out on PC. However I still cant get Madden on my PC. And because football is one of the greatest video game conversions I think exists on the planet. I will still be playing at least a game a week on the PS4. So as much as I would love to see Madden in 4k. I cant afford to upgrade for just 1 game. So odds are I'll buy whatever PS is on the market once this one burns out someday. Otherwise, cant wait! See you in 10 years I hope. And probably on the day I get my tax returns.

I'm all for developments in hardware, but it feels like this generation hasn't had a chance to stretch its legs yet. There’s been precious few must have titles, and a bizarre overreliance on remastered games from last generation and sequels of ip that’s become a little long in the tooth. The current hardware is capable of doing very decent looking games at 1080p, and it still hasn’t been fully exploited.
I think this is happening two years too early, and frankly, I don’t think a hardware refresh is going to solve any of the content problems we’re seeing on this gen. Tbh, I wonder how many of these they can actually sell to a user base which is going to feel a little betrayed for buying into the eco system, especially recently.
One of the great things about console gaming it that the hardware is relatively cheap. The message I’m getting here is that those days are over. I’m going to stick with the PC my primary gaming environment, because while the hardware costs are high, games are way cheaper and last longer. And the eco system isn’t subject to the whims of some crackpot executive in Sony or MS.
I expect parents will find all this particularly cynical, especially come December.

I paid $500 for a Day One edition XBOX ONE less than 3 years ago.

It's disingenuous to be releasing new consoles less than 3 years in.

And for what? VR tech?

These are not just slimmer versions of my console. These are basically "new consoles".

Nobody says you have to buy it. And its not like the console you bought will be discontinued it will still work.

There mistake was choosing inadequate hardware for the first revision then saying they won't refresh for 10 years.
