The myth of a superhuman AI I've heard that in the future computerized AIs will become so much smarter than us that they will take all our jobs and resources, and humans will go extinct. Is this true? That’s the most common question I get whenever I give a talk about AI. The questioners are earnest; their worry stems in part from some experts who are asking themselves the same thing. These folks are some of the smartest people alive today, such as Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Max Tegmark, Sam Harris, and Bill Gates, and they believe this scenario very likely could be true. 3-D printing offers new approach to making buildings The list of materials that can be produced by 3-D printing has grown to include not just plastics but also metal, glass, and even food. Now, MIT researchers are expanding the list further, with the design of a system that can 3-D print the basic structure of an entire building. Chrome will start marking HTTP sites in Incognito mode as non-secure in October 2017 Google today announced the second step in its plan to mark all HTTP sites as non-secure in Chrome. Starting in October 2017, Chrome will mark HTTP sites with entered data and HTTP sites in Incognito mode as non-secure. El Salvador bans metal mining in world first El Salvador on Thursday became the first country in the world to ban the mining of metals in what campaigners called a landmark move for environmental protection. The comment about all of those 'experts' saying they agree with the AI takeover idea is completely used out of context. Saying its possible and saying you think its going to happen are different things.
None of them think its going to happen, the AI takeover myth is ridiculous nonsense.
 
That AI article is human stupidity at its best, in particular the discussion of general intelligence. AI will take jobs not because it will be generally better, but because it will do specific things better. A car driving AI won't be a great conversationalist. Lip reading AI won't drive cars. An AI that sorts out fruits or checks the results of an assembly line won't do other things. That's why they'd be able to do better than humans.

AI taking over the human race is a cliche science fiction plot. AI and robots taking over jobs will be reality. They might not take over jobs that require abstract thinking, but they will take over jobs which require specific, well defined skills. Both sides that say that nothing will happen or we're all doomed are stupid.
 
When the AI article mentioned Elon Musk next to Stephen Hawking as one the smartest people alive today I dismissed the article.
I could be wrong but AI only knows as much as you allow it know, right? So that doesn't make them smarter, only as smart as we want them to be, right?

Efforts to stop human intelligence from learning things haven't typically been very successful, why do you think it'd be any easier when that intelligence is made out of other materials?

The trouble with evaluating AI is that we have little idea how efficient the human design is. If the human body and brain is pretty optimum in terms of complexity for a given energy cost then it's likely there'll always be a place for something derived from the original human brain design.

If it turns out that the human brain is evolutionary dead-end like the compound eye then we could well see AI replace human-style brain design. Although it'd likely be a gradual process with whatever emerges from the other end still thinking of itself as human even if we wouldn't recognise it as such.

But all of this is hundreds or, far more likely, thousands of years in the future. All we're going to be building over the next century is more complicated machines.
