Windows 10 vs. 8.1 vs. 7 Performance: Microsoft's latest OS put to the test

In regards to this comment:

"There have been a few minor issues so far. I haven't looked into this yet, but my photo and media libraries with thousands of items take a long time to load in Windows 10, whereas they loaded instantly before the upgrade from 8.1. Clearly a bug waiting to be fixed."

MS acknowledges this and suggests right-clicking your folders (pictures, videos, music, etc NOT IN THE "LIBRARIES") and optimize them as "GENERAL ITEMS" under the "customize" tab which will DRAMATICALLY speed up the population of the items is said folder.

The performance trends will be the same when testing with a hard drive. The load times will just be inflated due to the use of a slower storage device.

Silly me, I forgot that I accessed this post through Google rather than my daily visits.

Tks for this Windows Reality Article !
IT convinced me of not moving up to W10.

If I was a Pilot and that was applied to the Racing Arena where someone from the Customizing Team would pushed me to race in a new V12 Car... leave behind my faster "V8 "....eventhough the new V12 does not (even) go faster....
First... I'd ask myself : Why do I need a change ?
Second I'd probably talk to the Cuztomizing Chief asking him:
"What in the Universe has his Team been doing to waste all the Extra Horse Power I should be getting from the more powerfull V12 Engine ?
...So, one could think that W10 is faster...it all depend if you really care for your Bucks !

There is something seriously wrong with this review. My Windows 7 takes 3 seconds to wake up from sleep. Overall looks like there is really no performance advantage of Windows 10 over Windows 7. I don't know what you are guys looking at but especially in gaming it is just marginal error. This review is a proof that there is no a reason to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, not a single reason in trade for giving up control over your OS, spyware Windows 10 is full of. I wouldn't be surprised if one of these days antivirus software installed on Windows 10 detects Windows 10 system files as having malware behavior and tries to delete them.
The performance measurement is not a true one.

There should be a way to reflect to the hassle and the headache that Microsoft enforced people to live through with this upgrade.

My Lenovo twist was working perfect with 8.1. I was totally convinced that it was the best ever Microsoft OS.

I read this article, and with the free upgrade, and the new touch features Microsoft promised, I went through the upgrade ..... :(

The performance suddenly became BAD, and kept going from bad to worst.

I checked almost every technical article to resolve problems, half of them never worked with me, and still waiting for answers

My tablet used to restart in 5 seconds, not 2 minutes and 18 seconds; this is until yesterday, and after 4 days of suffering and agony.

Even when I rolled back, 8.1 is never working the same ....

Some apps don't work ... most importantly Windows Update ... it still insists that I should upgrade to Windows 10 for FREE ... as this word is the catch that will convince everyone to become Microsoft Rat Lab.

I reached to a point where I signed a petition for Bill Gates to fire all executives in Microsoft and get back to behind the steering wheel of this company, because those guys are ruining everything.

Just wanted to share this with you all. Hopes you never face this

The test performed don't offer a compelling reason (IMO) to upgrade to W10. But a month ago, I tried Win10 on my Lenovo Laptop with a SSD and HDD. I really struggle with the idea of dumping something that has been working well for years on the hype that it will make coffee and eggs every morning. But I tried it and after 4 days reverted to 8.1. IMO the changes W10 brought didn't justify the price (free). I also worry about MS having drivers for some of my older peripherals - a photo quality printer that is 15 yrs + old and a even older scanner. Both have req'd some gymnastics to get them to work with W7 & 8. Both had trouble during my limited experiment.

I also worry about the forced upgrade downloads. They seem non-threatening for now but in the future MS may discover they can put advertisements of various products in the downloads. Sure, we'll squeal but with their market share, they would shrug and move on.

I think I'll stay with 7 & 8. Thank you Techspot = I appreciate your hard work.

I reckon this thread is well past it's sell by date. it did have some point a long time ago but it is going nowhere now. For most of us W10 is good news. Those who are scared to make the plunge, plus the diehards and Microsoft haters are unsurprisingly the most vocal but you can't stand in the way of progress.

Driver problems will be solved eventually if the hardware isn't obscure and is actually used by more than a handful of people. Especially for GPUs which is the most important driver in a system (typically)

I think you're in the minority here anyway as most people see Windows 10 as a pretty decent upgrade over Windows 8.1 and even Windows 7
kinda doubt that as it seems on just about any site you get on, that gather info on what os your using an overwhelming amount of the people that respond by far use and keep there windows 7. Microsoft themselves just recently estimated that over 65 percent of pc users use windows 7. This is a big mess for ms and they intend to do something about it via free windows 10 and other incentives. I own both windows 7 and 10. I like them both but even though I don't speak for everyone I do speak for a lot of people when I say I don't really consider windows 10 an upgrade. If most people did consider it an upgrade there would be far more windows 10 users by now no question.

Others in the family have tried W10 and like it but so far I've not persuaded them to make the upgrade. I think that they are scared that something might go wrong. Let's face it that is never a good place to be however good you are with computers. The failure to launch of Windows 10 mobile phones has put quite a brake on things. I thought that W10 might motivate me to get a smartphone but I've now lost interest. Windows 10 will dominate but it'll take quite a while. The summer deadline for the free upgrade will probably make a big difference.

What turned me off about Windows 10 was the graphics performance and drivers issues with AMD R7 m265 on my laptop, I get about half the FPS I used to on Windows 8.1 with absolutely no support from Dell, AMD or Microsoft, I'd rather use Intel HD Graphics 5500 which has proper graphics drivers and actually performs better.

Other than that Microsoft Edge was great, I really enjoyed it, along with the new start menu after major tweaks. Overall the system looked good after changing everything around. But due the problems listed above I'm back to Windows 8.1 and it's glitchy mixed set of metro apps. Other than it, I'm quite happy with Windows 8.1, even owning a touch laptop I dislike the metro stuff.

Creator's Abortion doesn't suck any less than other post-Windows 7 versions of the OS. Both of my systems are dual-boot Creator's Abortion w/ Windows 7 SP1 and I can confirm it's no less sucky... even after my severe modding and filth exorcism it's still barely tolerable and doesn't really bring anything to bear in terms of performance advantages over Windows 7.

Windows 10 is faster than windows 7 ??? Nonsense ! I set up both exactly the same as each other and on the same computer and I ran Passmark Performance Test on both and Windows 7 was faster in almost every test and some by more a small amount, Microsoft must be giving you people a kick back for talking nice about windows 10 !

I'm staying with Windows 7 !

Interesting...so in 2018 there's really no compelling reason to upgrade from Win7.

(Manufactured obsolescence when MS stops supporting the platform doesn't really count as actual obsolescence)
