Windows 10 will "run on everything", says CEO Satya Nadella

Will it run on my Dell Optiplex 740 from anno 2006? have win XP on it and 7 just in case.
Also, when will the first upgrade and fix come out? My list of files on my PC is large - 50% of the files are Microsoft updates and fixes.

I'm so excited for Windows 10. As an app developer, the prospect of creating a Windows 10 app and having it run on phones, tablets, desktops, and the Xbox is just unheard of and makes me giddy.
Not the first attempt :sigh:
The POSIX standard was a first level attempt to get code that could be compiled for/on any platform, but did not address the runtime libraries ( x.so vs x.dll).

The Java 'code once, run everywhere' was also a partial success.

Just for grins, I'll mention an application package that ACTUALLY does (code once, run everywhere) this; tclTK (but not acceptable for system work). tclTK provides even 'portable windows' using X11. Sadly however, it is all interpretive and not compiled - - just no free lunch is there!

My hope is that this new OS will load cleanly "over the top" of whatever MSOS version I am currently using at the time. Since I will have to build a new computer long before this Windows 10 is released, I will need it to load cleanly over Win8.1 or whatever version I have at the time. If the past is any prologue, this won't be a good experience.

I don't know what you issues have been, but I have never had issues booting MS Install media and formatting the drive for fresh install.

@cliffordcooley - perhaps he meant upgrade not clean install.

FWIW I upgraded my Win 7 machine to 10 and didn't have any issues at all. Everything still worked as expected.

Oh come on people! Get off of your old shool shoes from the early 60s and accept that the things are changing for good. Still complaining for the start menu, really?? You want the old shitty win 7 start menu? No, this is not gonna happen! MS are smart enough, they are working to bring a new things to the market, not to keep the old alive forever. I'm using Win 8.1 Pro and I love it, it's an great improvement over 7 and I don't miss the start menu as I'm using Start8. Windows 10 is looking even better from what I see and read all over the web and I can call it perfect - good job MS!

@niklabs - Did you even read what you wrote? Complaining about people wanting the Start menu back, and then you are using a 3rd party solution to make just that happen in 8? Then saying 10 is looking even better when it DOES bring the Start menu back?

@SNGX1275: Yeah, I know what I'm saying: I'm just using Start8 and have never cried about that, that's what all the people have to do instead of hating on Windows8 all the time. And now Windows 10 is behind the corner and we all are seeing that there is start button and menu and again people ddon't like one thing or another... They said that the start menu is fully customizable and you can remove the tiles and such a things so I just can't say this is bad desicion, I like it. The only 2 problems of Win 8 were tiles and the lack of Win 7 like start menu, but if you install one single program called Start8 Win 8 become an optimized and modernized version of Win 7 and working with this OS is really enjoyable.

Yes, that is unheard of (for Windows). Don't people realize this was one of the main selling features for JAVA (in 1995!)?

By introducing a preschool atmosphere?

As for your stance about shutting up about the start menu, that will happen under one condition. I will shut up about the one aspect of Windows I want to stay the same, if MS splits their bundle and drop all the software that I don't use. Let me make a list.

Software that I do not use: [My preferred software of choice]
  1. Windows Explorer [Total Commander]
  2. Internet Explorer [Recently switched to Firefox after using Opera a few years]
  3. Windows Media Player [Media Player Classic]
  4. Disk Management [Partition Wizard]
  5. Windows DVD Maker [Nero]
  6. Sound recorder [Audacity]
  7. Paint [Paint.Net]
  8. Picture Viewing [Irfanview]
  9. BCDEdit [EasyBCD]
  10. Windows Backup [Seagate DiscWizard]
Software I do use:
  1. Calculator [only for simple calculations, I use Excel more often.]
  2. Wordpad [I do have Office 2010, but don't need the facility of Word for text editing.]
  3. Disk Cleanup [CCleaner does more but doesn't get everything]
  4. Windows Restore Points [The one feature that do like about Windows]
  5. Safe Mode [Rarely needed but does come in handy on occasions]
There is a software titles I use from MS that is not bundled. I don't have a problem with downloading them. Shame the Start Menu of choice can't be one of the downloads. I download Windows Live Mail for my email application of choice. In a digital world you are supporting the idea that we don't deserve choice, when there is no reason for a single pathway. If you want me to shut up, then get MS to drop all the other trash in their OS! Tell me again, why I should feel obligated to continue paying for features I don't use, when features I do use are being removed or replaced with trash? And also tell me again, why I shouldn't be entitled to complaining and sharing my disappointment in MS?

That's just the point. Who wants to reformat the whole drive and destroy the set of apps and data that would then have to be reloaded if you can even find them all. I want the NEW OS to load over to top of the old one without the need to reformat the drive and cause me hours if not days of work .

Ok then... You're telling me that should I want to install 10 over say, Win8.1 without reformatting my drive(s) I could do it and all my apps, games, and data would still run smoothly? That'd be good!

I don't know, I would EXPECT that is how it happens since I did that with 7. But I have not done an 8.1 or even 8 to 10 upgrade, so I don't know that for sure.

I understand. There are no guarantees, but since you could do it with 7 it seems likely it will be possible with later versions. Thank you for your responses.
