Windows 8.1 offers plenty of Metro enhancements, but mostly forgets about the desktop

My gripe is the opposite of all you win 7 fanboys gripes. I have 3 monitors and would like the metro to stick on the secondary screens. Currently, I can make it pop up on my secondary monitor but clicking on anything on the Metro pops it back down.

It is not about dumping Win7, it is about dumping Windows3.1 ~ Windows7.

Many have been using Windows since Microsoft left MS-DOS. The GUI workbench/desktop is a phenomenal idea and very productive. I NEVER had to look/search for anything, because I could creat arbitrary folders and place icons in them.

impossible now, because MS thinks it is more beneficial to the end user to rearrange my icons everytime I shut the folder. I never had to use my keyboard to navigate a computer, everything was a few mouse clicks. Now everything is hidden deep and no quick way to do anything (w/mouse clicks). MS is forcing searching upon all of us. Even when we know where stuff is... But purposely make it harder to click to it, be ause they think typing is fun.

All of you cry babies should just switch to Apple or better yet Linux. Do you think for one minute Microsoft is going to listen to a bunch of nerds on a tech site. You're out numbered 100 to 1. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Windows 8. I'm using a 30" non-touch monitor and a mouse and keyboard and it works perfectly. Get out of you mommy's basement, get a job and most importantly get a life.

Okay, I guess that's their final answer to desktop users. I hear ya loud and clear now Microsoft. They gave desktop users one answer. The middle finger. No Windows 8 in my future.

I hope their gamble on "tweens" flocking to a desktop pays off. Can't believe they are actually going to **** over enterprise consumers for "tweens".

Good luck to ya Microsoft. The ship has set sail. Look out for the icebergs.

Microsoft is just trying to cater to evolving, more promising markets. OBVIOUSLY they can see that the desktop market is dying very slowly, so they need to get in the tablet market NOW before they're out of business for good. You want Microsoft to stop doing this with Windows 8? STOP BUYING SMARTPHONES AND TABLETS AND JUST BUY DESKTOPS. Unless it's a Windows Phone 8 or Windows tablet...

What does tablets and smartphones have to do with desktops? Sure they are evolving a lot and it's great, but I don't see why their interface, which is meant for small touchscreens, have to be put on a desktop. It's illogical and everybody knows it, you don't have to be tech-savvy. If that was the way to do it then we would have seen it done a long time ago by others (Linux/MacOS/3rd party desktops/etc).

I am a Microsoft fan but WHY is it that you should NEVER use their new OS until Service Pack 1 comes out?

Fail on launch every time.

Windows Phone 7.8 anyone? Hang on, we are just patching it again coz our testing procedures are done by Aldi.

We never said it didn't work perfectly for "tweens" updating their "twitter" accounts. So your ranting for nothing. However, make no mistake about it. If I have to go to Linux in the future, you can bank on it. I will.

Edit: Oh, and saying were outnumbered 100 to 1 is ludicrous. If that were the case Windows 8 would be much more popular than it is. Looks like you need to lay off the crack pipe as you seem to be having illusions of grandeur about Windows 8.

Even if we were to generalize your statement and say that 1 out of a 100 tweens prefer a simplistic child-like touch-screen interface versus a keyboard and mouse it wouldn't help Windows 8. Android and apple have that class of people locked down. Well, except for nerds like you who actually think using a touch-screen interface on a 30" monitor....*LMFAO*....is an intelligent thing to do. Hope you got really long arms so that you don't burn out your retinas from sitting that close.

Someone at Microsoft needs a reality check. From the surface dance commercials to windows 8 metro on desktops and now the Microsoft one. Seriously someone at that company needs to wake up before its to late.

Hooray for you. Now, why not go play with your 30" monitor someplace else?

I don't really care for noobs. I absolutely don't care to be talked down to by them.

And here's the kicker, I have no intention of buying Windows 8, getting a job, and certainly not on your recommendation, nor don't live in my mother's basement.

So, it looks like you just did a bunch of perfunctory yapping that fell on uninterested, unimpressed, pretty much deaf ears.

You can be that arrogant if there really isn't a viable alternative.

With that said, mute your telly, install "Office Libre", (anything but M$ Office), and stick with whatever version of Windows you have now until you simply can no longer access the internet with it

Microsoft should ADMIT defeat....Enterprise users are NOT going to upgrade, since the drones in the cubes DO NOT HAVE TOUCHSCREEN monitors. Duh...

No restored Start Menu = Microsoft is lying though their teeth about listening to their customers. If the restored Start Button just takes a user back to Metro, Microsoft has pretty much just spit in the faces of their users and has indicated that it no longer has any real interest in remaining in business, because the outrage that will be engendered by such a move will make the anger triggered by the original Start Menu removal look trivial.

Potential customers are waiting to see if 8.1 shows Microsoft is listening or not. If not, then the current stall out in PC sales will be nothing compared to what's going to occur after a poke-you-in-the-eye-with-a-stick 8.1 is released.

Given what's coming down the pike with 8.1 and Xbox One, Steve Ballmer seems absolutely determined to kill Microsoft.

My WIN7 install looks like WIN2000. I ditched their 'ribbon' Office applications for OpenOffice and have never looked back. If one of the Lynix distros could give me a stable XP-application experience I'd go pure NON-MS.

Ha!

People don't seem to grasp this is Windows 95 all over again. It's gonna be a bumpy ride, but the train sure ain't stopping; having a relative that works for MS, I can tell you that much.

And quite frankly, at this point, I've ran out of ****s to give. Some still have plenty, I see.

Bahhh, blind followers!

Tell us, what is your position/relationship at Microsoft? Your postings have always seemed a bit more than a simple consumer relationship. You always speak as if you have insight, the rest of us don't have.

Two points will keep me from moving on.
  1. Metro
  2. Lack of Aero
Both points are cosmetic issues. Neither one is an issue that should have been forced upon us.
  1. Metro could have been offered as a choice or at least offered with better cosmetics.
  2. Windows Aero could have been disabled with systems running on battery power. There was no need in Battery saving features within a desktop machine.
I don't have an issue with moving on for the sake of moving on. I'm just not gonna purchase a car I can't stand seeing in my driveway. This train of limited choice has ended for me, you can ride it out if you want. I may be a minority, and honestly the only thing that frightens me is the lack of choices elsewhere. I'm not here screaming for the train to stop. I'm standing here screaming for choices.

Now for the first time, I will ask if you. Are you someone who will stand in front of me and point blank say I don't have a right to ask for choice? Because that is exactly what kind of vibe I get every time someone comments the way you do.

Start Button is fine. I think it is time to move away from the classic menu we all know and love.

If you know and love something and it gets the job done better than anything else then why abandon it? We've had steering wheels in cars for 100 years. Should we should switch to using "dash gestures"?

Self-driving cars aren't far away. Google it. And currently there are cars that parallel park themselves.

Because you're a forward-thinking, forward-moving man, unlike these old geezers. I've never seen so much whining about so miniscule an issue in my life. Over a button and a menu. Unbelievable how stupid these people are.

Time to switch to macbooks :D

That'll show microsoft

Why not? Everyone else has. Apple hasn't been the underdog for years. Go to any college campus and you'll see that without a doubt.

I have tried to stay away from all these Windows 8 discussions, I know most techs hate windows 8 ( I am in the like windows 8 camp) and they prob hated windows 95 since it wasn't DOS and they all hated windows Vista since it wasn't XP, techs and other users take time to adapt to new technology. The younger generations might be the ones into Windows 8 the most right now, but the same could be said for the iPhone in its beginning, I don't remember seeing anyone really over 30 using a iPhone till at least the iPhone 3gs. Microsoft is in no danger of going out of business simply because a lot of other companies owe Microsoft a lot of money anytime they make a tech device due to there extensive patent holdings. Is Windows 8 designed for the Enterprise user, no that wasn't it's main focus, hence why Windows 7 Enterprise is still being offered and Windows 7 Pro, and its still being pushed to those users that need that style of OS. Windows 8 was designed for the consumer market, the consumer market according to every analysis out there is moving more towards mobile devices, is it so crazy to think that Microsoft will be making 2 operating systems one for business and enterprise focus and one mainly for consumer tech? From what I have heard from my relatives in Redmond Microsoft has no plans of dropping windows 8's style or "metro" anytime soon for the consumer market, does this mean they won't offer another version desktop focused for those who want/ need it for business usage, no, is it gonna be on the consumer PC's when you walk into a local PC store prob not, but they can prob sell it to you. As someone who sells Windows 8 computers everyday the biggest scare I see in the average consumer is just the fact Windows 8 is prey different, same thing I saw when Vista was released, but after time they adapted and Windows 7 came out and was one of the best. I am sure by Windows 9-10 most users will have no problems with this new Windows layout, especially when there using it on there tablet or phone (or both)

I don't "follow" Microsoft...That shallow thinking is precisely what stirs the so called "fanboy" wars on the internet where, apparently, you can't have a different opinion, hold valid arguments, and not have any sort of 'allegiance' to brand or company. You see, however, I don't fall for such trivialities because even those who disagree with me, like yourself, often times, have no facts to prove me wrong. I take quite a bit of comfort in that.

And why do you assume I have a position/relationship with Microsoft? Is it because I don't pander to the insurmountable bickering from one or two hundred tech nerds about how horrible Windows 8 is?

If you take the liberty to read my posting history, you'll realize I'm perhaps the most unbiased user around here. Why? Because I don't associate myself with the companies that make the tools. I simply take the right tool for the job. I just happen to have a brother-in-law who does work for MS, and every now and then I ask him about what he can tell me. I'm not claiming to have any more 'inside' info than that.

Two points will keep me from moving on.
  1. Metro
  2. Lack of Aero
Both points are cosmetic issues. Neither one is an issue that should have been forced upon us.

Those are legitimate, personal complaints. As long as you understand you're in the minority, not much to say here.

Don't know what else to tell you other than this sounds like a personal problem. You see, laws don't get passed based on the date; it takes majority consensus. Posting online about Windows 8 being horrible, telling your friends and family not to upgrade, will not change the fact that MS looks at their numbers. If people are buying, they'll keep supplying. And don't get me wrong, I don't 'like' Metro, but I'm not also going to sit and say it hinders my desktop experience. It doesn't. You CAN disagree (go back to my first paragraph's second sentence to see why you can).

It all really comes down to lack of familiarity and learning curve, things that come much, much easier to regular folks. You know, those who buy Dell laptops, iPods, who use Office for school. Regular people who have no idea what RAM is. These are the customers MS 'listens' to, not NeoGAF, TechSpot, or Twitter.

My brother-in-law has told me that the Start Menu is gone for good. Like thermonuclear good. The only reason the button was brought back was because enterprise wanted it. Surprisingly, even, businesses that have made the jump don't have that much of a problem with Metro, seeing how you really only see it 1% of the time. Take that however you want.

Now for the first time, I will ask if you. Are you someone who will stand in front of me and point blank say I don't have a right to ask for choice? Because that is exactly what kind of vibe I get every time someone comments the way you do.

Well, that's a weird question. We went from me being a blind follower, to giving the vibe of someone who claims people shouldn't ask for choice. All I'm saying is that the opinion of the minority does not matter, and that change is as inevitable as a train not stopping. Like the one that didn't stop in 1995 and now in 2013, ironically, some don't want to hop off of.

And I don't understand your last sentence... You imply I give you a vibe that I think you don't have a right to voice your opinion, and yet, you apparently could care less for the opinions of those who post like me. (You know, essentially those who disagree with you.)

It's like you're irony personified. Amazing.

Self-driving cars aren't far away. Google it. And currently there are cars that parallel park themselves.
Not being able and willing to park your own car, is like admitting you really shouldn't be on the road in the first place.

Just like standing there with a megaphone and shouting, "look at me I'm proud to have no skills"!

BTW, I'm not a M$ "fanboi". Nor am I stupid enough to give M$ a hundred bucks for a new OS every time they shove the "Church of Windows", collection plate in my face, then stand up and shout, "praise be to Lord Bill", thou hast made me full with myself.

I'd hazard a guess you're there every Sunday though, in your self parking car....

You've made it obvious how swell you think you are. Frankly I'm baffled how someone as humorless and opinionated as you, racked up 12 likes against 38 posts.

Did your twin sister join with you? Or did you join again as your own twin sister?

BTW, I'm bracing myself for the onslaught of one of your all capital letter tirades. Read between the lines...(y)

you apparently could care less for the opinions of those who post like me. (You know, essentially those who disagree with you.)
Here is the thing, I'm not trying to force you or anyone to go a certain way. I'm not stating this is the way things will be. If I state anything, it's the way I will be. I'm asking for choices, because I don't understand why we don't have them. Your the one stating the train is not stopping, which suggest that choices will not be given. No I don't have a problem with your opinions or desires. You seem to have a problem with mine though.
