<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

I have a Windows XP Toshiba Satellite and I shut down. When I started up again, I had a black screen then it came up with the following error:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing
or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

When I press any key at that point, the computer restarts with the same results.
If anyone knows how I can fix this without erasing my programs, wiping the hard drive, returning to original factory settings, etc. please help.

Much appreciated,
~D

Repair

You put in the Windows XP CD/DVD (if you're lucky, you'll have one) and boot from it. At the second R option, press R. Follow instructions. If you do it right, it won't erase anything. Disclaimer: I do not accept any responsibility for anything that may happen. Use the info at your own risk!
