Windows XP pro does not recognise usb device

Hi all. I'm new to this forum and a bit of a novice, hopefully you can help.

Every time I plug anything into a usb port I get an error message "one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows doesn't recognise it"

I tried everything that trouble shooter has suggested with no success.

Is this into a hub or directly into your PC? And is it any USB device? Is it with any USB port?

Directly into my pc. And yes, any device and any port.

Every time I plug anything in to a port I get the error message quoted above.

sounds like your motherboard driver is corrupt or you may have a loose internal USB cable.

This may be a long shot but is easy to try. Shutdown your computer then UNPLUG the power cord from the wall socket (and remove battery if a laptop). Leave it unplugged overnight then try powering up in the morning.
