xAI employee praised by collegues for working 36 hours without sleep

A hot potato: In an era where we're told to have a work-life balance and not grind ourselves to death, it's depressing to see xAI employees publicly cheer a colleague for working 36 hours without sleep. Unsurprisingly, his boss, Elon Musk, who demands we live and sleep at the office while simultaneously having more babies, gave his seal of approval.

xAI employee Parsa Tajik wrote on X that he recently left the company's office after 36 hours of working without sleep. "Although I was dead, I was also super energized. Incredibly grateful to be a part of this team. Happy Thanksgiving!" he wrote.

Tajik's post received a few positive comments, although most of them came from his colleagues. Fellow employee Ayush Jaiswal wrote, "Work life balance is great, in-fact we recommend it to all our competitors. Don't be angry with this post. You're free to disagree & let us cook :)"

Even Musk joined in the fun, though the single crying with laughter emoji he replied with seemed quite noncommittal.

Musk, of course, has long argued that work should come before everything else. He famously slept on the floor of the Tesla factory during the Model 3's production.

Musk appears to have a passionate hatred for working from home, too. There was also the "hardcore" work culture of 60-hour-average weeks he demanded Twitter employees agree to or quit, which led to one former exec being awarded $600,000 in an unfair dismissal case.

But Musk constantly warns about the world's declining birth rates – the world's richest man often says that he's done his part by having 14 children. Ironically, this decline is partly due to people working so much as they need the money or fear they'll lose their jobs if they don't.

In a follow-up post, Tajik wrote that he has been working long hours for many years, and it's how he went from almost being homeless in 2020 to joining xAI.

However, plenty of people have pointed out the difference between working hard to achieve success and being exploited in a reckless manner that comes with health risks. There are also studies showing that working incredibly long hours can negatively impact productivity – this one found that the most productive workers "rest" almost two and a half hours during an 8-hour workday.

As one person replied, "Sacrificing your health and sanity for someone who would replace you in a heartbeat is not a flex."

Musk isn't the only person known for praising an extreme work ethic. Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy recently raised his call for a 70-hour workweek to 72 hours. He also praised China's brutal – and outlawed – 996 work culture, which involves working 9am to 9pm, six days per week.

You know, reading a story about these employees, who are actively working to ruin our lives with their AI BS, destroy their own lives long term by causing brain damage with lack of sleep, my initial reaction is to smile and say "good".

Perhaps they should try a 36 day work day, with no breaks? What could go wrong?

36 hours straight, of which 24 hours or more was spent doing sloppy work from the tiredness (never mind that AI itself is slop work anyway, but still), very much evokes the Japanese work culture of "you can even sleep at your desk out of exhaustion,so long as you are devoting your life to your business!" and you can see how well that works when they have to put s**cide netting around the tops of office buildings et al
Not saying everyone should work 2 hours, but keep it reasonable and you will have a more productive workforce in the end

Imagine what you will say on your death bed, Will you say, I wish I had more money in the bank, or I wish I had spent more time at work, or I wish I had put more effort into making my boss richer... or will you say, I wish I had spent more time doing the things I enjoy or spending time with family etc... Take a guess what you will think.

I actually enjoy my work as a software engineer, But I only work the hours I am paid and contracted for. I wonder how my fresh 37 hours a week compare to this guys 36 hour stretch, Which of us will have got more done in the time I wonder, Which of us will need to go back and redo things due to stupid mistakes.

Long hours for simple labour where you do the same thing... sure, your brain can zone out and go on auto pilot.
Presumably something to do with programming considering it's xAI I highly doubt it was all that productive. He'll have a good night of sleep, go through his code the next day and probably throw half of it out because it's garbage and then spend 10 hours debugging the rest.
From having done late night coding sessions and having seen the code of others doing the same, more often than not you're better off calling it quits and circling back to it.

You have no idea what motivates this guy

There have been times when I'm in the zone so I could semi-understand busting out extra time. However, it also requires working for a company/person who I feels like actually cares about me. Also requires having no roadblocks in what I'm doing. A lot of the stuff I'm working on these days requires people from other teams to do something and can be like pulling teeth.

Nobody noticed or talking about an elefant in the room.

Names of these employees. The one who did it and these applauding him. Neither American nor Western at all.

These are slaves and their pride and applause worth exactly the same as Roman gladiators glorifying emperor on arena. Musk as an emperor in that case.

Disgusting what it all has become

I'm an engineer and computer scientist and productivity and creativity are going to start to decrease after that first 12hrs. If they had just gone home and gotten some sleep that work probably could have been completed in 2 12hr shifts rather than one long 36hr shift.

A 36hr shift isn't something that should be praised, they might want to look into the management failures that necessitated a 36hr work shift.

We wouldn't let an employee work 36hrs straight even if they wanted to, just from a health and safety standpoint it wouldn't be allowed.

Scientific research says productivity falls after 4th hour. After 8th it goes down the cliff.

This Elon Musk motivation video espouses work comes before anything its titled "Work Like Hell"

He talk having a girlfriend and working so much that if she wanted to be with him she had to sleep in the office too. If that isn't work above all else I don't know what is.

You didn't even quote him, you quoted the title that someone else wrote. What he said IN the video is "depending on how well you want to do" and "particularly if you are starting a company". These are not arguments that work should come before everything else as the writer suggested, they're conditional statements. It should be obvious to anyone that your level of success if dependent on the amount of work you put in. He doesn't have a great work life balance, but I haven't heard him argue against a work-life balance for others. He might require a high work ethic for many of his employees, but that's not the same as claiming work must be #1 in their lives.

Show me here where that claim is even remotely true: https://www.tesla.com/careers

The closest you can get is "Hard Problems, Meaningful Work" and "if you’ve done exceptional work" which is not "work should come before everything else".

My manager’s manager’s manager believes in a 16 hour workday and 24/7 on call notice. Good thing I have the invisibility of those three levels of management to avoid being watched directly. World is crazy…

They are paid well, this is alright.
What is not, is when a boss millionaire encourages
employees on near minimal wage to work overtime.

What 36 hours of no-sleep does to your body isn’t mentioned - doing that several times will basically ensure you die young
