XP crashing

HI guys, Hope you can help with something.. I have to say that its pretty hard to track down the issue on this.

Basically my pc started just closing and rebooting for no reason. Currently got XP HOme with SP2 installed..

I thought it may be a virus, so using AVG free, I have done a few searches but it brings nothing up. So tried the MS Malicious software remover.. It also found nothing.

When it reboots, sometimes it says there was an error relating to the RUSTOCK.GEN virus, and ive used a certain scanner to find it, but it says nothing is in the system.

So, Ive also used the MS security scanner, which works intermittantly, but quite often saying that the activex controls need to be enabled for it to work. These are also enabled, so that doesnt work.

I thought I would install MS Onecare but when its on the desktop and I go to install, it shuts down the pc.. and that happens every time I go to install it.

One thing that also make me wonder if its an MS problem is that if I try to go to Microsoft Update to get the latest patches, it says that it needs some and they need registering, but then it wont let the pc install them.

Also it says that it cant download any software because we cant validate the O/S. Ive tried all the tests and it says that it should validate, but when you go through to do it, it wont let you.

There seems to be a number of certain factors that keep making the pc crash, but nothing specific points to one certain problem.

I am worried that a virus has got its way past AVG and is doing what it can to cause problems.

Has anybody got any clue how I can move forward with this??

Here is the last log from the event viewer when it crashed about 20 mins ago

I googled the RUSTOCK.GEN virus and people who are infected experience the same rebooting issue you have. Here is some advice given to me that you may want to try. Others may have different approaches.

Click start >click run >type in msconfig click on the startup tab then uncheck everything there except your anti virus and internet connection . Click ok and your computer will restart.

2) Do an online virus scan to check and remove virus and spyware if you still have viruses on your computer. Let us know if the online virus scan still finds any virus or spyware. Good free online scanners are Kaspersky, BitDefender, and Trendmicro. This will take time and you will have to allow either ActiveX or a Java Kernel to be installed depending on the program. Trendmicro takes the longest but I think it may be the only one that also cleans, but I could be wrong.

3) Get another anti virus program if your present anti virus program is not protecting you any longer. I have read recently that people are experiencing some issues with AVG. A really good place to check out anti-virus programs is the Wilders Security Forums. Trust me, it will never replace TechSpot because it doesn't deal with the issues this place does but it certainly is tremendous for anti-virus, firewall, and spyware software discussions.

Hope I've been of some help.
