XP with many viruses - ran Avira, now programs wont run unless run as unchecked

Many viruses in my system. I ran Avira and "quarantined" all the viruses [I think the instruction from Avira said "do not access"], and now nothing runs from "start-programs" (always get "rundll file not found" error). I can only get programs to run if I can find them on the disk and use "<right click>run as" and uncheck the "protect my computer" box. Haven't been able to get CCleaner to run, but Hijack this and Malwarebytes both ran OK, so I have logs. I haven't deleted the 230 files found by Malwarebytes yet; I'm afraid it won't boot if I delete windows 32/system files. System runs in Normal mode or Safe mode and internet access works fine, although I get a lot of popups even though popup blocker is set to high. I use the computer mostly for internet and Excel.

XP SP2 running on e-systems computer with 512MB memory, 200MB hard disk. First virus problem 3 months ago - anything plugged into USB port caused the mouse to lock up. I had Best Buy "clean" the system, but they ended up reloading Windows and within 2 days my virus sw had an error, and wouldn't run. I have AVG, Avast, and Avira, so I'll have to decide on one, but right now I can't add or remove programs - "file not found". Msconfig won't run, but regedit will. Restore points do nothing.

I don't know my administrator password, and can't find my operating system restore disk. I'm hoping to get this system beyond the "limping along" stage it's at right now.

Any help would be appreciated.

but Hijack this and Malwarebytes both ran OK, so I have logs.

Please Attach Malwarebytes log and Avira log in next reply- but PASTE the HijackThis log. If makes my searching easier if I can do it from my browser.(Ctrl V)

You will likely need to run additional programs, but I will have a better ides when I see the initial logs.

Whe I copied and pasted the hijackthis log file in my reply I got the following error :

I turned off "automatically parse links in text", but it didn't help, so I attached the hijackthis log instead of copy/pasting it here.

The only way I could get a report out of Avira was to print it and scan it as a PDF. It's 16MB. Is that too big to attach here? If so, I will break it up into smaller pieces and post with the next reply.

With CCleaner I get "run time error '0'"

do you see all those "no action taken" messages in the Malwarebytes log? Please rerun Malwarebytes and TAKE ACTION on these by quaranteeing and deleting all the entries!

Everything listed in the Malwarebytes log is BAD. You can quarantine and delete everything without worry. If you don't do this, your system will remain severely infected, as the Malwarebytes log shows

The reason I'm gun shy is the headline of my post - the system reached this limited state only after I ran Avira and quarantined all the bad files. I don't want it to happen again so I came here for advice before taking action again.

By the way, how big an attachment can I include on this forum? I have the Avira log as a PDF, but it's 16MB.

DELETE THE MALWAREBYTES FILES and don't post the Avira log. It is not needed... I can't be any clearer. After deleting the Malwarebytes files and following Bobbye's detailed instructions, download and run CCleaner and Advanced SystemCare free on a regular schedule... I don't think I ever saw a more "infected" computer. At least one that I didn't immediately delete the primary partition, format and reinstall Windows fresh

lbreno, you have a badly infected system. Here is what must be checked in Malwarebytes to remove what it finds:

Look for the red line in the directions:

• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart

You need to UPDATE Malwarebytes> scan again> check every line in the results. Keep the log and attach it in your next reply.

Until and unless you get some of this malware off the system, you are facing a crash.

After rescanning with Mbam, do this:
Please download VundoFix.exe HERE and save to your desktop:

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the ‘Fix Vundo’ button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

Please attach the C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Follow that with a NEW SCAN with the current version of HJT which is v2.0.2. you version you ran is out of date. HijackThis.

Malwarebytes is impressive. Looks like we got it. Latest scan is attached.

I still can't post hijack this log, so I have attached it.

Vundofix found no errors (didn't generate a log file).

I re-downloaded and ran ccleaner.

I plan to install a firewall; is comodo OK?. Any suggestion as to which antivirus to run (avira, avast, avg),?

do I still need to run sfc?

but you still have some suspicious stuff in the hijack log. I'm sure Bobbye will have some more advice for you. He has been doing a great job in these forums, and I am learning as quick as I can, to help out here. While applying all the missing Windows Updates will help greatly with your computer's security, you still need to make sure you are clean. Adding a 3rd party firewall should not be done until you know you are clean

So how is your computer responding now? Any improvement? The HiJackthis log still looks "fishy" but Bobbye will have to guide us further

Please do not install, uninstall or run any other programs or apps on your computer while we are cleaning.Your Host files have been hijacked- Malwarebytes should handle this but the last HJT log still show this.

Please do the following, in the order I have given and do not run any other programs or apps:

• 
  1)[Download LSP-Fix HERE and Save to its own directory on the desktop.
  2) Double-click on the file to open.
  3) In the left hand column, you should see the lejivaya.dll and dowemuma.dll files listed.
  [o[Click on each to highlight
  [o] Click the arrow in the middle of the screen that points to the right
  4)This will move the filename to the right-hand column labeled Remove
  
  [o]NOTE: If the arrow is greyed out and does not allow you to click it, you need to check the box above labeled "I know what I'm doing"
  
  5) Once the file has been transferred to the Remove column, click Finish at the bottom of the screen.
  [o]You'll be presented with a results screen showing the files were removed from the Winsock layer entries in the registry.
  6) Close the LSPFix .

Please reopen HijackThis to 'do system scan only'. Check all of the following if present:

Update Malware bytes and rescan. Be sure to check for the removal of the malware it finds

2). Please download ComboFix HERE:

• With ComboFix, at the download window, please rename it to Combo-Fix(.exe) before downloading it.
  
• Please disable all security programs, such as antiviruses, antispywares, and firewalls. Also disable your internet connection.
  
• Run Combo-Fix.exe and follow the prompts.
  (Understand that things like your system clock changing and your desktop disappearing might happen. Do not worry, because all will be restored later.)
• Wait for the scan to be completed.
• If it requires a reboot, please do it.

• After the scan has completed entirely, please post the log here. The log will be located at C:\ComboFix(.txt)

Notes:

• 
  1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
  3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
  4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Rescan with HJT and paste in new log.

The system now appears to be running normally. I downloaded and ran LSP fix, and the only files that appeared on the left sider were nwprovau.dll, mswsock.dll, winrnr.dll, mdnsNSP.dll, and rsvpsp.dll, and it says "no problems found" in green at the top. I will post this reply, close this window and all other windows, then reopen hijackthis,check for the boxes noted, and post the result. Should I continue with your instructions even though the files you wanted me to remove were not present?

Combofix and Malwarebytes (quick) logs attached.

I turned on Microsoft updates (when I thought everything was good) and it wants me to install a Microsoft Malicious Software Remaval Tool (I haven't yet).

The only things giving me trouble (and it's very minor trouple) are an error message before I reboot that says WMP54Gsx1_1.exe application error - instruction xxxxx couldn't be read. I click OK and the system proceeds normally.

I also ran advanced system care.

Now I'm wondering which ones among the antivirus tools I've used I should keep active on my system (only after it's clean)..

You had three AV programs running with Combofix. They were all suppose to have been disabled.

The error has something to do with Windows Media Player. since it comes whern you reboot, it means the WMP is on the Startup menu: (it doesn't need to be)

Start> Run> type in msconfig> enter> Selective Startup> Startup menu> UNCHECK any processes related to WMP> Apply> OK

Reboot. Ignore and close the nag message after checking 'don't show this message again.' Stay in Selective Startup.

Remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created

• DownloadOTCleanIt by OldTimer
• Save it to your Desktop.
• Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
• Click the CleanUp! button.
• If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.

The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.


You should now set a new Restore Point to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points. The easiest and safest way to do this is:

• Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
• Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the Restore Point a name then click "Create". The new Restore Point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
• Go to "Disk Cleanup" which can be found by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.
• Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you desire.
• Click the "More Options" Tab.
• Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one. More details and screenshots for Disk Cleanup in Windows Vista can be found here.

• Zone Alarm

You should have only one software firewall. You may also use a router. Most routers have a hardware firewall in them. You can use both hardware and software firewalls together, but use only one software firewall.

Consider these programs for Extra Security

• Spywareblaster:
• SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX. It places kill bits to stop bad Active X controls from being installed. Remember to update it regularly.
• IE/Spyad
• This places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts files This replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
• Google Toolbar Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
