Yet another winsock problem

Please help a computer amateur.
After purging my computer of malware, I can’t link the computer to the modem (either using Internet Ex. or Firefox Mozilla.) The troubleshooting diagnostic on IE comes up with this message:
For WinSock Status:
Error attempting to validate the Winsock base providers: 2
Not all base service provider entries could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed.
Redirecting user to support call

I’ve tried using the “netsch winsock reset” command to reset (and LSPfix, WinSockxpFix, and MicrosoftFixit50203) with no success.
The modem (a Verizon network Westell 75000) works; it links wirelessly to a netbook I also use.

Can anyone offer a solution?
Much Thanks
SteveR.

Try booting into safe mode with networking & see if the issue still occurs. Many times when we remove viruses/malware/etc. we don't get everything there still could be something remaining causing the problem. That being said - sometimes in the removal process other files can get damaged/corrupted. Try this: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html it's a downloadable tool to reset the winsock files on your PC. If the problem persists please post. Hope this helps!
