What just happened? Almost exactly a year after Adobe Premiere debuted on iPhone as a free but full-featured video editing application, the Android version is finally available for download on the Play Store. The app is free to use on all compatible devices and offers the same professional editing tools that made it such a hit with iPhone users.
In an official blog post announcing the Android launch, Adobe noted that the app is not only free to use but also offers non-watermarked 4K video export without any login or account requirement. While almost all free applications display ads as the primary source of revenue, Adobe promises that Premiere will not have any pop-up ads or upgrade prompts that could disrupt workflow.
The editing tools offered in the free version include an unlimited multi-track timeline for layering videos, as well as audio extraction and trimming. The app also includes the AI-powered Enhance Speech tool to clean up background noise - a feature the company is very keen on highlighting through collaborations with social media influencers across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and X.
While most of the features are available for free, Adobe is keeping some generative AI tools powered by Adobe Firefly behind a paywall. These include text-to-video and image-to-video, as well as AI sound effects and Generative Fill, all of which require generative credits available through an optional subscription or a Creative Cloud plan. Cloud storage also requires a paid Creative Cloud upgrade.
Premiere offers an extensive suite of essential features and AI-powered tools for hobbyists and professionals alike, but Adobe says that it plans to add even more with future updates. Upcoming features include support for Adobe Fonts, enhanced captions, keyframes, cropping, beat detection, and syncing with the desktop version of Premiere.
Adobe Premiere is available for download from the Google Play Store for devices with 5GB or more RAM and running Android 13 or later. The relatively relaxed requirements mean that the app will be supported by most Android devices in use today. The company also noted that the app supports various form factors, offering native compatibility with both flip-style and book-style foldables.
