The takeaway: Bloodborne remains one of FromSoftware's most enduring games, even though it has never received official enhancements beyond its original PlayStation 4 release. More than a decade after launch, recent estimates show it still draws a sizable audience, which may explain why it has become a prime target for efforts to hack and emulate PlayStation consoles.

Alinea Analytics recently estimated that Bloodborne has sold more than 250,000 copies so far in 2026 alone. The figure is impressive considering the action RPG launched in 2015 exclusively for the PS4 and has never been updated for newer hardware or re-released, despite popular demand.

Analyst Rhys Elliott also noted that nearly 500,000 people played Bloodborne in October alone, a count that includes PlayStation Plus subscribers. The game's design, inspired by H.P. Lovecraft and Bram Stoker, has likely made it a popular Halloween pick over the years. Alinea estimates lifetime sales at 10.4 million copies, generating around $317 million in revenue, while 5.7 million PlayStation Plus subscribers have played it.

The game's lasting popularity also raises questions about why Sony and FromSoftware never upgraded or re-released it in any form. Bloodborne received its final major patch in December 2015, nearly a year before Sony launched the PlayStation 4 Pro. FromSoftware never updated the game to increase its resolution or framerate on the PS4 Pro or PlayStation 5, so all consoles still play it at 30fps in 1080p.

Bluepoint pitched a remake, similar to its Demon's Souls remake, which launched alongside the PS5 in 2020. However, FromSoftware reportedly turned it down, and Sony later closed the studio. Last year, former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Shuhei Yoshida theorized that FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki cherishes Bloodborne so much that he would rather update the game himself, but has been too busy with later projects such as Dark Souls III, Sekiro, and Elden Ring.

For now, enhancing Bloodborne's presentation and performance is only possible through unofficial methods. Emulation via ShadPS4 has reached the point where the game can be played at up to 70fps on an Asus ROG Xbox Ally X handheld. With mods, the game can support 120Hz on a jailbroken PS5, and AI-assisted coding has produced unofficial "native" PC ports.

Whether Sony or FromSoftware plans to update, remaster, or remake Bloodborne remains unclear.
