As we approach the end of 2008, TorrentFreak has compiled a top ten list of games which were copied and shared over BitTorrent alone this year, revealing few surprises but should still make for some interesting read. Topping the list at 1.7 million downloads is Spore, EA's long awaited evolution simulator which drew much criticism for its invasive SecuROM DRM and copy-protection system.

It's worth noting that Spore came out in September, so that figure is essentially for a mere three months. It isn't the only Electronic Arts game to make the top ten either - The Sims 2, Crysis and C&C 3: Tiberium Wars also made an appearance, which is ironic considering they all use SecuROM to supposedly protect them from piracy.

It'll be very interesting to see if EA decides to repeat their DRM strategy in any future PC titles despite the obvious fact that it does close to nothing against piracy, but given their very decent sales figures it is likely they will. Other games listed include Assassins Creed, Crysis, Call of Duty 4, GTA San Andreas, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2 and PES 2009.
