Opera revealed that it had integrated ad-blocking technology into the developer version of its web browser back in March. Now, a stable desktop version has been launched, along with an updated Opera Mini browser for Android that brings the same features to the mobile platform.
When Opera showed off its built-in ad blocking two months ago, it became the first major browser to introduce the feature; this stable version should offer roughly the same performance as that early developer build. The company claims that by integrating the ad-blocking tech directly into the browser code, it can speed up page loading times by as much as 89 percent.
Opera added that its software is 45 percent faster compared to Google Chrome with third-party ad-blocking extensions such as AdBlock Plus installed.
“Opera is the first browser company to offer an native ad blocker across devices. We do this because we want to provide people with the fastest browsers in the market. Our speed test shows that online ads slow down the browsing experience. Now, with Opera, you can browse a lot faster than, for example, in Chrome," says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera.
With the new ad-blocking features enabled in the Android version of the browser, the company says that sites will load about 40 percent faster and users will consume less of their data allowance.
Opera gave people more reasons to switch to its browser last month when it introduced another built-in feature: a VPN.
While Opera may be lagging behind other browser in terms of overall market share, it still boasts 60 million desktop users each month. Opera Mini, meanwhile, has over 100 million monthly users. With the introduction of the ad-blocking and VPN technology, it’s no surprise to see Opera’s browsers continue to grow in popularity.
