Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are just a few of the many services that have published Year in Review round-ups as 2017 rapidly approaches. While such outlets attract swarms of people, Google search is still the backbone of the Internet and thus is perhaps the best measuring stick of all to see what really had people talking in 2016.

In its annual Year in Search post, Google breaks down the top trending topics of 2016 across several categories including people, consumer technology, sporting events, TV shows and more on both global and localized scales.

In the global "search" category, the top five results include Pokémon Go, iPhone 7, Donald Trump, Prince and Powerball in that order. In the consumer tech category, Apple's iPhone dominated with the terms iPhone 7, iPhone SE and iPhone 6S securing the first, third and fourth results, respectively.

2016 will also be remembered as the year that we lost several celebrities including David Bowie, Christina Grimmie, Muhammad Ali and the aforementioned Prince.
