Amazon Echo Show 8 - 2025

Overview

Amazon’s latest Echo Show 8 is a solid all-around upgrade. Its new look is much welcomed, opting for the same design language as the Echo Show 10 (2020), and the speaker offers solid audio, smart home connectivity, and clever features, fronted by a gorgeously thin and bright display. However, the removal of the physical camera privacy shutter makes for an unfortunate change.

There’s not much in the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) that would likely make an existing Google or Apple smart home user switch, but if you’re after a mostly-compact smart home display and can live without a proper physical camera shutter and the price point the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) commands, it’s worth considering.

The Echo Show 8 looks good, it sounds good, and it’s packed with clever skills, powered by Alexa. It’s more expensive than the older model, but it’s better, and I wouldn’t recommend stepping back to the 2023 model if buying new today.

The Amazon Echo Show 8 adds some useful features over the standard 'voice only' Echo devices but, whether these are important to you is going to be a personal thing. Whilst the Amazon smart home eco-system is very broad, it is also very shallow and doesn't really support a lot of the features that we consider important in a smart home. It is a very long way from one coherent, joined up smart home experience.
