If you can spare the cash, the Core i9 benefits processor-intensive tasks, but graphics show slim improvements.

The new 15-inch MacBook Pro is probably the most powerful laptop we've ever used. It can carry out tasks that would normally freeze up a normal laptop and the i9 core just takes the performance of the laptop to the stratosphere. It can last longer than 10 hours if you don't use it for editing videos/images and is capable of rendering 4K movies in under 10 minutes.

The MacBook Pro aims to be the pinnacle of creativity, productivity and performance on a laptop. While it packs a punch with the most powerful processors, loads of really fast memory and a display that adds value to your workflow, there are small frustrations like the lack of commonly used ports.

The 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro provides impressive performance -- especially if you add the Core i9 upgrade tested here. The fact that the MacBook Pro can accommodate a powerful CPU and GPU without increasing its size or weight -- or affecting battery life -- is no mean feat either.

So at the end of the day, my buying advice remains the same. Unless you are a creative professional that relies heavily on apps that can take advantage of the hexa-core processor or GPU acceleration, there is no real need for the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

True Tone is a nice feature, but is it a must-have? The same can be said for Hey Siri. If you’re not a pro app user, work in iLife and internet apps, and bought a MacBook Pro within the last two years, you probably don’t feel compelled to upgrade. If you do, however, you could opt for the $2,399 15-inch MacBook Pro with a 2.2GHz Core i7 processor and be happy.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro delivers strong performance, fast storage and long battery life. But it's as expensive as ever, particularly if you want a roomy SSD. And we'd like more ports.
