Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra

Overview

For now, if you want to dabble in gaming, content creation, and AI workflows, it's probably the best laptop you can buy that isn't a MacBook Pro. And even more importantly, I foresee it starting a new era in Windows laptops that will grown into something truly special in the not-so-distant future.

The Surface Laptop Ultra is the most beautiful laptop Microsoft has ever made, and RTX Spark is powerful for AI models. But if you don't run AI models, there's nothing novel for normal Windows users to take advantage of, and this system is very pricey.

It's a super solid laptop with several unique capabilities. If you can get over the quirks of its ARM-based platform, it offers portability and power in one place.

By Gizmodo on October 16, 2026

Surface Laptop Ultra is Microsoft's most powerful PC it's ever shipped, debuting with a new silicon platform, first-gen Mini LED screen, and one of the best trackpads I've ever used. But with just okay battery life, a less than class leading display panel, and a high price tag to boot, this isn't the laptop for everybody.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra is expensive enough to make most buyers hesitate, but for professionals who can use its power, it is one of the most capable Windows laptops I have ever tested.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra is the closest Windows competitor to the MacBook Pro yet. It can run AI models locally, alongside AAA games and creative apps.

If you’re the type of person who really does want everything in one package, then the Surface Laptop Ultra’s multiple personalities may actually suit you. But the math is still somewhat complicated. You’re paying a premium for bleeding-edge tech where not all features are available yet, and having to do so under the umbrella of Microsoft services, with all the live logins and subscriptions that come with it.

For anyone whose work is single-threaded, browser-bound, or built on a discrete-GPU model that fits in 24GB, the x64 field is likely the better buy, and the Precision 5 16S and Blade 16 split that choice. We will follow up with hardware impressions and battery life once the lab finishes with the chassis, and with the vendors’ answer on the power-off as soon as we have it.

It is a statement of intent from Nvidia about where computing is going — trading raw benchmarking crowns on the stats that we currently see as important for the ability to carry a self-rewriting, fully autonomous, CUDA-accelerated digital brain in your backpack.
