If power/heat is a secondary concern for you, then the various drives built with Phison's E26 controller can be good alternatives, for quite a bit less money, but be aware of their cooling requirements. Unless you need the super-high transfer rates, it's worth checking out Gen 4 offerings, too. We recently reviewed the 2 TB WD Black SN7100, which is the fastest Gen 4 SSD we ever tested—$150.

The Crucial T710 has proven to be one of the most powerful, yet coolest running Gen5 SSDs to date. It comes with a 5-year limted warranty and pricing and availability were still to be determined at the time of this report.

At its current price point, the Crucial T710 is difficult to recommend. The WD Black SN8100, another newly released drive, is already available at a slightly lower price than its original launch cost. Meanwhile, Samsung remains highly competitive, with the 2TB 9100 Pro selling for $200 at the time of this review.

Crucial has long had competent offerings for Gen5 drives. I was impressed by both the T700 and T705. The T710 continues that trend and is the fastest Crucial drive I had tested. If the Samsung 9100 PRO did not exist, the T710 would be my undisputed Gen5 king, but since it does I consider the two drives to be peers atop the Gen5 mountain. If you are building a new system and want the absolute very best, the Crucial T710 deserves your consideration.
