Does anyone know who how to turn off check disk?
I ticked the chk box in drive c and it said it would schedule the nxt time I restart
Now it automatically checks every time and I think it will wear out drive c
Is there a way to stop this happening?

I have printed and read 3 times that microsoft site and I dont understand a word.
It seems to be saying I have to mess about in the registry and if I do I may have serious problems. Is there a blow by blow set of instructions anywher that I can download and follow?

run chkdsk /f c: and let it run to completion at least once.
then go back and run chkntfs /d

The above is it !
No registry to do

Checkdisk will run twice,.... actually just do this
chkntfs /d
Restart

Then once back to Desktop restart again, hopefully no more CheckDisk !!!

Hmm, that'll work. But it also disables Checkdisk all together (until you re-enable it again)
Whereas the chkntfs /d command, resets CheckDisk back to defaults

Either way, I suppose

Thanks Kimsland for your assistance but I am a dumb silver surfer.
I clicked START/RUN/CHKNFTS/D but the reply was "Windows cannot find..."
Should I be in the Safe Mode? Exactly where do I type Chk etc?
I do appreciate all the assistance you can provide. Thanks also to CCT but I don't want to disable anything I might need later unless it's a last resort

Start --> Run --> CMD --> OK

On the command line type:

chkntfs /d

Then press Enter

Now, that word is C H K N T F S then a space, then a forward slash, then D
(ofcourse there are no spaces in chkntfs)

I am stupid - I made a mistake with the spelling
I have now followed instructions many times but the line just repeats itself.
START/RUN/CMD/OK gives c:\ Documents and settings\my name\>
When I type in CHKNTFS /D and press enter, the above line just reappears underneath
Any further sugestions would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks

No, that's right :)

I think you must restart now, and if it runs again, try one more restart (hopefully then it won't do it.
Otherwise try CCT's post

I would like to know the outcome, note I have done this before, but I can't remember if it just shows nothing on the command line.

Anyway restart

Slow down and READ the instructions:

click start
then click run
then type 'cmd /k' (without the quotes)
then type 'CHKNTFS /D' (without the quotes)

NO - still checks disk
Incidentally my Spybot popped up and asked if I wanted to allow change to the registry and I said no as I don't know what it will change. I never know whether to allow change or not as it does not say what the affect will be.
I have taken it slowly and I do READ the instructions (I am old and grey) so do you think I should follow CCT's route?

OK - many thanks to kimsland and Peddant for assistance.
I seem to have finally cracked it by typing chkntfs /x c:
I saw this at the bottom of the screen in "Similar Threads" A question raised by cfitzarl on 31 Aug 2006 was answered by Peddant. I wonder, however, if this route has disabled Check Disk as in CCT's kellys-korner?
Once again, Thanks to all

Spybots !

You needed to answer YES to that question
The easiest way to reverse that question is to un-install Spybots S&D fully, then restart, then type chkntfs /d on the command line (to reset CheckDisk again)
Then restart (I think it may do a CheckDisk again)
Then for all subsequent Restarts and turn off/on it should be OK.

Also I was thinking that if your HardDrive is actually faulty, then you will also get this CheckDisk happening all the time (this would be good!) Because the HardDrive may be in fact be faulty.

Thanks Kimsland
I've now done all that. First it said "Volume in use by another process & would chk on nxt start" but now seems ok.
I t still will not accept CHKNTFS /D but it has stopped checking each start up
