Hi there,

I stupidly downloaded something which I shouldn't have (I wanted to download a game) and now my computer is acting strangly.

Basically, when my computer starts I can not open firefox. When I click on firefox, nothing happens. I have Norton 360 Premier Edition as protection, but that also is not responding - although for a split second every now and again Norton pops up bu then dissapears again. I've noticed any WinRAR files don't open too.

For some reason, other things open fine. I am currently typing this in Internet Explorer - which worked fine.

Any ideas what I should do? I would really appreciate some help.

Thanks

Lucky you! I just signed on to the board! Problem about pirating or file sharing is that you really don't get it free! All kinds of 'trash' come bundled with it.

If you would like us to check the system for malware, please follow the steps in the Preliminary Virus and Malware Removal thread HERE.

NOTE: If you already have any of the scanning programs on the computer, please remove them and download the versions in these links.

When you have finished, leave the logs for review in your next reply .
NOTE: Logs must be pasted in the replies. Attached logs will not be reviewed.
=========================================
My Guidelines: please read and follow:
  • Be patient. Malware cleaning takes time and I am also working with other members while I am helping you.
  • Read my instructions carefully. If you don't understand or have a problem, ask me.
  • If you have questions, or if a program doesn't work, stop and tell me about it. Don't try to get around it yourself.
  • Follow the order of the tasks I give you. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • File sharing programs should be uninstalled or disabled during the cleaning process..
  • Observe these:
[o] Don't use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you.
[o] Don't use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.
[o] Don't download and install new programs- except those I give you.
  • Please let me know if there is any change in the system.
If I have not replied for 2 days, you can send me a PM reminder. Include the URL of your thread. Please do not send me a PM to tell me your logs are up.
If I don't get a reply from you in 5 days, the thread will be closed. If your problem persist, you can send a PM to reopen it.
=====================================
And a special note: I just happened to bring up the forum right after you posted. Understand that reviewing the logs takes longer!

Hi, thanks for the quick response!

Okay, things haven't started all that well! I already had the Malwarebytes thing on my computer, so I ran a quick scan which found a number of things wrong. I followed the instructions and it asked to re-start the computer, which I allowed. The annoying thing is that I can't access the log!

I opened 'Programe Files (x86)' then opened the Malwarebytes folder, but I couldn't find a 'Logs' folder or option anywhere. So I opened Malwarebytes properly again and clicked on 'logs'. My log is there with the date, but it will not open as it won't respond! Any ideas?

PS: Am I being stupid (probably), but why did you say you are new to the board when you have over 12,000 posts?

Not that it matters, thanks either way!

I tried Step 3: GMER, but it didn't seem to work properly. I think that was more to do with me no doing it right rather than the computer.

I also did Step 4: DDS, which seemed to go OK, but then two notepads didn't show up. Any idea where I can find them? Although I probably can't open them either!

Hi, sorry me again!

I just realised I was meant to reinstall any old scanning programs I had. So I uninstalled Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and then reinstalled it. Did the same thing again, this time the notepad file popped straight up. Also, there was a lot less files infected compard to about 20 mins ago when I did it with the older one.

This is what popped up:

Hi,

OK everything seems to be working OK again now. Norton can now open and I am undertaking a 'Quick Scan'. Firefox also will now open.

Do you think that means everything is OK again? Should I be doing anything else?

Sorry for the constant harrassment!

No, I'm not new to the board. I just accessed the forum for the afternoon right after you posted.

Every one of those short sentences that you make a new post for sends me email feedback. Please use the Edit feature for these short comments. I think you can cut down on the confusion if you take time to carefully read the instructions.

You Reply #3, 4, 5 and 6 could have all been one post.

Ouch. Okay, I can't apologise enough for that, didn't realise it would be such a problem. In case you hadn't guessed, I'm a complete ***** with computers.

As far as I know, the problem has been sorted. Please let me know if you think that's not the case.

Really am sorry.

You have been a member here for almost a year. I only see one other thread in that time. But I will be frank- however you want to put it- if you don't know enough to read and follow directions, then you shouldn't have a keyboard!

Now that we have that out of the way and I have deleted all the excess emails, let's finish up>> read and follow:

I also did Step 4: DDS, which seemed to go OK, but then two notepads didn't show up. Any idea where I can find them?
Notepad doesn't 'show up'- you have to open it:
Click on All Programs> Accessories> Hover the cursor over Notepad> Choose 'pin to the Start menu'> also click on 'Send to> Desktop to create a shortcut.
Now you will have Notepad handy when you need to copy and paste a log. Important: when you open Notepad> Click on Format> Uncheck 'Word Wrap' before you coy a log.

Open Notepad> copy each of the DDS logs.

I followed that link and downloaded what you instructed me to. When I double click on it it says:

"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgraded patch"

And then that was it.

So I wasn't sure what to do, so I deleted all Adobe progams I had on my computer and then tried it, but got the same message. So on the Adobe website I downloaded: Adobe Reader 10.1.0, Adobe Flash 10.3, and Adobe Air 2.7.

Please let me know if I shouldn't have done that and I will delete them. Not sure how to get past this opening problem.

Thanks.

So on the Adobe website I downloaded: Adobe Reader 10.1.0, Adobe Flash 10.3, and Adobe Air 2.7.

You did good! I gave you an update link but if the old version was removed before the update, there would not be a program to update.

At any rate, you have the correct versions of all.

You're welcome! The system is clean and updated and the tools have been removed. I'm leaving some tips to help you keep the system clean:

Tips for added security and safer browsing: (Links are in Bold Blue)
  1. Browser Security
[o] Safe Settings (Please ignore the suggestion to use the Registry Editior in this section "Creating a Custom Security Zone")
[o] ZonedOut. This manages the Zones in Internet Explorer. (For IE7 and IE8, Windows 2000 thru Vista. No Windows 7)
    [o] Replace the Host Files
[o] Google Toolbar Pop Up Blocker
[o]Web of Trust (WOT) Site Advisor. Traffic-light rating symbols show which rate the site for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, Child Safety.
  2. Have layered Security:
[o]Antivirus :(only one):Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus
    [o] [o]Avast-Free Antivirus
[o]Firewall (only one): Use bi-directional firewall. Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Comodo
    [o]Zone Alarm
  3. Antimalware: I recommend all of the following:
[o]Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.
    [o]Spybot Search & Destroy
  4. Updates: Stay current:
[o] the Microsoft Download Sitefrequently. All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates.
[o]Adobe Reader Install current, uninstall old.
[o]Java Updates Install current, uninstall old.
  5. Tracking Cookies
    Reset Cookie:
[o]For Internet Explorer: Internet Options (through Tools or Control Panel) Privacy tab> Advanced button> check 'override automatic Cookie handling'> check 'accept first party Cookies'> check 'Block third party Cookies'> check 'allow per session Cookies'> Apply> OK.
[o]For Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cookies> check ‘accept Cookies from Sites’> Uncheck 'accept third party Cookies'> Set Keep until 'they expire'. This will allow you to keep Cookies for registered sites and prevent or remove others. (Note: for Firefox v3.5, after Privacy click on 'use custom settings for History.')
I suggest using the following two add-on for Firefox. They will prevent the Tracking Cookies that come from ads and banners and other sources:
    AdBlock Plus
    Easy List
[o]For Chrome: Tools> Options> Under The Hood> Privacy Section> CHECK 'Restrict how third party Cookies can be used'> Close.
  6. Do regular Maintenance
    [o] Temporary File Cleaner
  7. Restore Points:
    [o]See System Restore Guide
  8. Safe Email Handling
[o] Don't open email from anyone you don't know.
[o] Don't open Attachments in the email. Safe to your desktop and scan for viruses using a right click
[o] Don't leave your personal email address on the internet. Have a separate email account at one of the free web-based emails like Yahoo.
Please let me know if you find any bad link.
