My computer won't get an IP address

Hi,

My name is Chris and I have been on this forum once before and I found a lot of help regarding my previous issue. Today I grace your presence once again because I can not solve this problem and I have been working on it for a while.

First off I would like to list my specs,

Operating System : Windows XP Home Edition

System Manufacturer : Dell Inc.

System Model : Inspiron 518

BIOS : Pheonix-AwardBios v6.00pg

Proccessor : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40Ghz

Memory : 3326mb RAM

Modem > Router > Switch setup, all of other computers internet works. So it is not the hardware.

Yesterday, while at work, I was doing the normal when my computer froze up (does that sometimes) So I did a hard restart, when it booted back up my internet card said "Limited or no connectivity". So I restarted the router and the modem (about 5 times now), says the same thing.

So I decided to go the LAN route and plug directly into the router, the LAC says "Acquiring Network Address" and it doesn't change from that state.

So I tried another wireless card, downloaded the drivers onto a jump drive and installed it blah blah blah, it says the same thing "Acquiring Network Address".

I called my ISP and went back and forth with her, figured out it is not the hardware (since all of the other computers get internet access) and it is not my ISP's fault because all of the other computers get internet access.

For the life of me I can't figure out what the hell is wrong with it. Any help would be great, since I am sitting at work waiting for any answer at all.

TL;DR - My computer won't get an IP address no matter what I do. Help please!! :(

The means that your connection (wired or wifi) did not get a reply from the DHCP request.

Don't start installing stuff just because there's a problem - - it frequently just makes things worse.

1) Verify that the drivers are seen and enabled
right click on My Computer->Manage
click Device Manager
scroll to Network Adapters and click on the [+] to see the components.
you should have NO red or yellow flags.
IGNORE the 1394 device; that's the Firewire device, not an Internet connection.
If there are red flags, then that device is a) disabled or b) has a driver problem.

2) Configure the Internet Connection device.
Disable the wifi device, then wire a connection to the router.
View Network connections, right click on the LAN Connection->Properties.
Scroll to TCP/IP, select that line and click the Properties button.
Make sure that Obtain {DHCP & DNS} are both marked [x]
Click the Alternative tab and [x] Automatic
click OK and OK again.

Disconnect the wired connection, wait 30 seconds and then connect again.​
 
Thanks for your quick reply, I really appreciate it.

I tried everything you listed. I have NO red flags and everything was already on automatic for the tcp/ip settings. I restarted the modem and the router and it is still saying "Acquiring Network Address"

Is there anything else I can do?

this is it; needs to be Hybrid.

Change via (start-> run->cmd) regedit

find this key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters
  • find the key NodeType
  • change the value to 8
quit Regedit
reboot
 
I got up to this point, but where do I change the value? I attached a picture of where I am at.

Can't see that you are at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\

but the NodeType is missing (actually also elsewhere)

Right-click on the right side->New-Dword
Name is NodeType (note upper/lower case)
set the value to 8
close and reboot​

when you get the desktop back, reverify via ipconfig /all
 
Must have screwed it up somewhere along the line.

I went into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\

I right clicked on the big open white area on the right. New>Dword> NodeType

I set the value to 8. Closed it and rebooted.

ipconfig /all still says broadcast.

Can all of this change from just restarting your computer? Because literally, that is all I did.
 
the whole path is

(NodeType is correct; the site inserts NoteT ype :sigh: )
 
I did it, and restarted.

The ipconfig /all says it is Hybrid now, but it is still having the same problem.

hmm; that's the address used to ASK the router for the assigned DHCP.
IP, Gateway, DHCP & DNS should have been returned.

Disconnect the system from the router.
Then power off the router by removing the power and wait 60 seconds.

Reapply power and wait at least 30 seconds

Now reconnect to your system, wait 30 more seconds

verify via ipconfig /all
 
how many systems are attached to this router and is the problem only on one of them?
 
There is a total of 10 computers on the router. None of them are having this problem. If this helps, I just did a ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew and this was the results..


Ipconfig /release:
Ip address for adapter Local Area Connection has already been released.

Ipconfig /renew:
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection; the RPC server is unavailable.
 
Not sure how, why or if that particular issue is also producing your blue screens, but we have seen some issues with Gigabit Ethernet NICs, having some problems maintaining consistent connections with
certain routers when the speed and duplex of the card is left at "Auto Negotiate".

You can try this and see if it helps with the reliability of the connection
run->cmd->ncpa.cpl
select then right click your Network adapter (probably says something like "Local Area Connection) and choose properties
Click the configure button near the top right
Select the advanced tab
In the left "Property" column, look for something called Speed & Duplex (may be worded slightly differently "Link Speed / Duplex Mode", etc.
In the right "Value" column select the drop down arrow and change Auto Negotiation to 10Mbps/Half Duplex
OK your way back out of there and reboot.
See if that resolves the disconnect issue.
If it does fine. Experiment with different settings,
Alternately you would probably want 100/Full but don't be afraid to settle for 100/half if that resolves your issues.

I changed it to 10Mbps/Half Duplex and messed around with a few other settings and it still hasn't changed anything.

I appreciate all of your help, I really do, if you have any other ideas come up. Please Please Please let me know.

a) clearly the router is ok with only one system having problems

b) the Hybrid setting is preferred, so leave that alone

c) your Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is known to have issues (sorry; you can google for yourself).

d) I would try to verify the Driver Verse installed and then look for a more current one.

btw: going to 10mps/half duplex *must* work if anything would work. Don't assume
that the 1000mps will work nor that it will always provide the best bandwidth.
 
You do mean driver version right? (I'm not sure if verse is something else, I'm not trying to be sarcastic) I downloaded the most current driver and I am going to go install it and see if that works, (i don't see how it would if 2 wireless cards and the lan don't work, but ill try anything at this point.)
 
Just got done installing the new driver for the ethernet card and I am getting the same problem. I am about to throw this machine through a window.
 
I tried going into my firewall settings to see if a port is closed or something and it is saying;

Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?

I press yes and it does nothing, I press no and it does nothing.
 
one other idea; your Firewall needs to have ports 67+68 open for UDP input.

Which version of Windows are you using and specifically which Firewall?
 
a) stick with the wired configuration and leave WiFi device disabled until the wired works - - it simplifies the effort

b) YES, you need to start the Service; set it to AUTOSTART
It needs these to be AUTOSTARTED before it will run:
  • RCP CALL
  • Network Connections
  • Windows Management Instrumentation

Has this system EVER connected to the internet correctly? If so, what was installed or change just before you suffered the symptom?
