I'm not sure I have a malware problem or a windows boot problem. I am running 64-bit Vista on an older Gateway laptop. It started yesterday as I was browsing the Internet and the screen went white (all except the mouse arrow). After a restart, it goes through the usual "starting windows" screens, my desktop background picture shows up, then the screen goes white. I see the arrow/hourglass and have mouse control. The hourglass comes and goes as if it's running something. Ctrl-Alt-Del gives me the usual options screen, but after choosing Task Manager, I get only the desktop background/mouse cursor. No start menu, no icons, no open windows. Telling it to shut down, I get a flash of my usual desktop, complete with icons, start bar, clock, and task manager, but then it blinks away and shuts down. I have restarted several times and get similar results every time (sometimes white screen, sometimes my background photo, always mouse arrow, never icons/start bar). Starting in safe mode, it lets me see the task manager, but the screen is just black with safe mode text in the corners, no start bar or background photo. in safe mode, it's currently running: csrss.exe csrss.exe lsass.exe lsm.exe services.exe smss.exe svchost.exe svchost.exe svchost.exe svchost.exe svchost.exe System System Idle Process taskmgr.exe wininit.exe winlogon.exe I would really appreciate some assistance about what to try next. Thanks!
