"Look at Google's satellite photo and there you can see the border," Pastora told La Nacion (Spanish translation), the largest newspaper in Costa Rica. "In the last 3,000 meters, the two sides (of the river) are Nicaraguan. Then from there to El Castillo, the border is the right riverbank, it's clear."

Apparently Google Maps isn't always right. The official maps used by both the Nicaraguan and Costa Rican governments show the border continuing on the right bank of the San Juan River all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. As you can see in the image above, Bing Maps shows the border more accurately. If Pastora is going to ignore the official maps and insists on using an online mapping service, maybe Costa Rica should tell him to just Bing it next time.
Hmmmm... I just knew I should have taken that left turn at Albuquerque...
OK, but let me ask you this,"who were they going to invade, if not Costa Rica"?
Invading Nicaragua would seem to be, "self defeating".
Listen, if they make you get all dressed up in soldier suits, give you guns, then send you out in the woods to play, what would be the point if you weren't allowed to invade a foreign country?
After all, if they just let all those hot sweaty men sit in the woods by themselves for long enough doing nothing, somebody's bound to violate, "don't ask, don't tell"!
Uhm... we are not on april... is this april fools a bit late?
Can't you just picture them, trampling down all the wildflowers, as they goose step to the Village People's", "In the Navy"?
Welcome to the 21st century's new excuse to wage war!
Google must be working with Nicaragua to conquer the world, one little map error at a time :-D
Since you have decided to attack Nicaragua as a country as expansionist because the country wants to take over San Andres which rightfully belonged to Nicaragua over 100years ago (international law now says Nicaragua has no claim) by attacking a country with no Army like Costa Rica which has more Police force and equipment than the Nicaraguan Army and Police force put together, I call your bluff and ask you to please look up the history between countries before making harsh comments....
Ohh Yeah... Nicaragua also lost land to Costa Rica... it is now part of their most popular beaches and productive farm lands... The Province of Guanacaste was once Nicaraguan Land as well... and after Costa Rica tried to take away the River that divides both countries less than 5 years ago (2007) in international courts.. its no wonder the Nicaragua JUMPS when it feels like more land is being "taken away"...
Too bad the Army guy seems to be inept...
Why would the military be relying Google for it resources? What happened to gps and a map? This is insane!!
Lets hope the chinese don't get the same idea in their heads....
This is too serious. It's better to believe Physical Map, not Online. But IS the military officer usually keep and accompany with the one who know the region ?
LOL. I can imagine this being the PERFECT excuse for other countries.
Israel: What the HELL are you doing over our line?
Iran: NO. What are YOU doing over OUR line?
Israel: My Map shows you're 10 ft. into our line!
Iran: Google says differently sucka!
Israel:...........................
Iran:...........................
tora tora tora... but the google fail version.

So Google is responsable for a war, that was unexpected.
So because there are more police to protect the population, the nicaraguan army can invade a foreign country? I believe they are trained differently though they surely can be labeled as thugs stealing what is not theirs. You pretty much show the kind of prepotence military all over the world have, not logical, specially if the official maps of the two countries show differently, and by the way Costa Rica won the diferendum on the rights of navigation in the San Juan river at the Hague court in case you did not know.
The whole, "The Google Maps were wrong" spiel sounds like plausible deniability.
WTF is a diferendum?
difference of opinion
AHAHAHAH EPIC FAIL
unbelievable!
If i was tiawan i would keep checking google maps doesnt make any mistakes with the chinsese borders ![]()
Wait, are we still talking about Nicaragua, or are we talking about France now?

"the note says that they took down a costa rican flag, apparently costa rica had taken the land for themselves... "
That is because the land it belongs to Costa Rica, read!!!
i think everybody knew that these maps are 100% correct, especially in areas like that. But it would be for the best to at least make the borders correct.
I really hate to play the role of a grammar policeman, but the author of this article used the word apparently incorrectly. Apparently is used to classify that which seems to be but may not be. That map is most certainly erroneous. Ergo, apparently is not the appropriate word. The word evidently is used to classify that which seems to be and is.
Evidently is the more appropriate word, and it should be used in this case
