Maingear Shift Gaming PC with Super Stock Options Review

Here's the scenario: You're bored one night surfing the Internet and you decide to do a mock build of your dream PC. Whether through your favorite e-tailer or a boutique system builder, you find yourself piecing together the ultimate powerhouse. Price is not a concern -- you want the baddest system your (imaginary) money can buy.

Once complete, you marvel at the resulting monstrosity and then come crashing back to reality when you see the price tag. We've all "been there, done that." Today we will be looking at that dream PC, the Maingear Shift with Super Stock options.

The Shift is Maingear's highest performing consumer desktop system to date, featuring a custom-built chassis from SilverStone. Pricing starts at just over $2,300 and depending on the options selected, you could shell out close to 30 grand for a fully pimped out system.

  1. This configuration is off limits for me, so I'll satisfy with the case only :P

I wonder if I can buy the case itself, it's gorgeous?!

  2. very nice article. if this config is $7000, i am really interested to see the $30,000 build: what the hell is in it, 10x256GB SSDs or something? geez!

anyway. the thing weighs 70 lbs. poor delivery man!

  3. This config makes as much sense as killing an ant with a hellfire missile... scratch that, with a 50-megaton nuclear bomb, scratch that with 3 nuclear bombs, and a planet buster. not that there's anything wrong with that.

  4. Maingear nukes games from orbit...it's the only way to be sure.

  5. It's put together very well, but it's not my cup of tea. CM690 for me please.

  6. This is the first system I've used that could run Crysis with everything maxed out without dropping below 70 fps ...

    Crysis (Very high graphics settings)

    1920 x 1080, 16x AA 73.4 fps 38.5 fps 22.9 fps

So if I read this this correctly then, The 73.4 FPS is the Minimum FPS and not the average FPS?

  7. That power supply could probably run my fridge and vacuum cleaner at the same time!

One critique I have with this and other "gaming rig" machines is that they are too ostentatiously designed. It's more of a problem with Alienwares and such that have glowing LED''s and neon colors all over the place. I mean, by the time a gamer can afford to buy such a nice machine, it's likely that he will have outgrown the phase where everything he covets is flashy and loud. It's like putting a picnic table sized spoiler on a Ferarri.

  8. Very nice. I love how they turned the components for top exhaust, heat does RISE after all. Cable management is beautifully done, but that's a given considering the price tag on this beast. I suppose the new question is will it run Crysis 2, haha and great review as always.

  9. I remember looking at Alienware back in the day and looking at dream computers. This thing completely blows anything I even dreamed of out of the water. It's nice to think that one day this computer, at least without the custom case, will be affordable to me, but then again that will probably be as far removed as the days I first learned of alienware and now. *sigh*

  10. This Maingear gaming PC totally rocks. I only wonder what's in the $ 30,000 config. Techspot should include this PC as the main prize in the contest.

  11. i'll take two please. one for work and one for home!
