South Australia wants to ban humiliating images from the Web

According to a report by the AAP, the South Australian government hopes to outlaw violent and humiliating images from the Internet. Proposed by Attorney General John Rau, the legislation is the first of its kind in Australia and would make it illegal to post demeaning images of others online without their consent. Rau said that the law is designed to punish people for publishing videos of themselves performing violent and degrading acts -- a common practice among teens.

"The government wants to attack this disgusting fad of thugs engineering and filming violent and humiliating acts and posting the images to websites," said Rau. "This behavior is so disturbing and potentially damaging to the victims that I believe the creators of these images should be subject to severe penalties, including jail sentences. The government wants to make it very clear that if a person participates in any way in an act of this sort, then the consequences will be severe."

The law would extend to all parties involved in posting the offending material. For instance, if you knowingly allow someone to upload the images with your computer or phone, you'll also be in the hot seat. Of course, this is all easier said than done and opponents of the proposal raise several valid concerns. "We have no indication of how this initiative will be policed or how we can avoid people being unfairly caught by the legislation," contests justice spokesperson Stephen Wade.

  1. That would make a fine and fitting motto...

"Australia: Lowering the bar for two-hundred years"

Believe it or not, South Australia is considered a "liberal state" in Australia....Queensland's reputation on the other hand is well deserved.

Queensland would probably go down instead

I think Queensland also has laws against that

As does West Virginia, but only with respect to immediate family "members".....

Now see what you've done here? Taken a perfectly innocent fat joke, and turned it into something vulgar. Good show....!

I belong to a number of informal associations that make it mandatory that I do so whenever I see the opportunity, and of course, heaping scorn upon each other is also how Australians and New Zealanders show sodality towards each other.

Is there a territory wide pandemic of, "paranoid delusions of Crocodile Dundee-hood"....?

What fo you expect from a country whose icons are cross-dressers, people stupid enough to wrestle wild animals, adopted americans with character defects and....a horse.

  4. So New Zealand is like Australia's Canada, eh? :P

That might be below the belt.

  5. Yep, that pretty much sums up the feeling...both ways, assuming that you're comparing Canada with the U.S.

  6. So New Zealand is like Australia's Canada, eh? :P

Imagine my surprise to learn that I hate Canadians and they hate us....can't we all just get along!...cripes!..I'm goin to the Legion!

**** now if you really want to see some yay-who's...never mind..

  7. That does give one pause to wonder how no pro football in the fall would be a bad thing.

    Go Eagles, go South Australia!

Would the cheese heads photo pass muster down under? Would self humiliation be exempt, or merely grandfathered in, limited to what's currently on the web?

Getting tired of waiting for that first Lombardi* ?

I didn't realise the Canadian/U.S. thing was a mutual hating. Aussie's and Kiwi's are more like two brothers that each have a superiority complex

(*Sorry, had to make use of the Dongslinger jokes- the man's only got three or four more comeback seasons left in him)

    Would self humiliation be exempt?..

It would have to be, or Australia would need to institute a complete ban on its population using Facebook and Myspace.

  9. Actually, the USA/Canada thing is a superiority complex, but it's only Canada that tends to exhibit the symptoms. We're really just America's ugly, attic-dwelling half-brother. Since we're in our own little world up here, we like to pretend we're kind of a big deal.

I gave up after attempt #4 Got tired of watching Dad cry)

Awwww, someone needs a hug Well I didn't know about this attitude, but then again, half of Minnesota disappears during the summer for Fly-in's /portages to pursue muske and walleye up there.

I think the response from Wisconsinites would be..."what humiliation?"

Indeed, ignorance is bliss, especially after you wash it down with the cheapest rotgut malt liquor that downtown Green Bay has to offer.

  12. That and the other *****'s remark about Australians are so at odds with what I have come to expect from the Techspot community, I am actually rather surprised to see such racism and stupidity here.

You lot come out with drivel like that and then wonder why you are among the most hated nations worldwide. And as far as the inbreeding goes, those in glass houses should not throw stones.

  13. "The world is full of people just waiting to be offended by something". So I take it that you're a happy customer.....

As far as the "drivel" you're spouting, if you were here long enough, you'd realize that we're just joking, but don't particularly care whether you get that or not.

Moving on, what exactly do you expect from the "Techspot Community"? My personal experience is that many summary passersby are looking for free advice, so that they don't have to pay to get their computer built or repaired. Does that mesh better with your expectations?

And by the way, I don't spend any time "wondering why we're the most hated nation on earth, I simply don't care what you think, what your opinion is, what you care about, what makes you "angry", or what you aspire to, period.

Astonishingly enough, the "most hated nation on earth" probably has the highest percentage of illegal aliens. So, my question is, "why don't you do us the courtesy of staying the f*** home, and hating us from there"? Nobody has to like us, we'll still send you your foreign aid check. We're good like that.

  14. That and the....

Does this mean I'm out of the running?

  16. I think we've had enough nation bashing and personal comments. Please avoid dragging the thread off topic. Thank you.

    While you wait,

why not do something with all this energy you have for searching to be offended to do something about that which is actually offensive. Give this guy a call. (Hurry before Cap busts my **** about that sentence structure)

OK, exactly to what "sentence structure" are you referring? You pioneering devil, you've "boldly gone where no English has gone before", into the realm of the "run on phrase". "If it's not one prepositional phrase it's another"! I think Roseanne Roseannadanna said that.

My heart burned when I saw your link. No really, I was furious. I just hope we've saved an extra Tomahawk Missile or two for wherever that picture was taken. No sense wasting all the "foreign aid"on Libya.

  19. I think a surgical (preferably with a rusty knife) strike would be more in order.

I'd save the Tomahawk's for the studio that produces "America's Funniest Home Video's" - there is something disturbing about people who just happen to have a camera handy when children come to grief. I wonder if that (and other tv shows of the same ilk) will be banned from South Australian TV channels.

  20. there is something disturbing about people who just happen to have a camera handy when children come to grief.

which is basically everyone with a cell phone, tablet or friends for that matter. No exclusion process is in order. This pic isn't that bad. While in college and having roomies we pooled 500 usd to buy a white cat just to dye it purple with beet juice. He was renamed "Eek," and is still to this day loved by many.

  21. It's a Cruel World that Forces an Innocent Pu**y to go Goth....

"500 dollars, screamed the man at the hooker in the Walmart parking lot"! Why I could get a white cat for less than half that.

Seriously though, the cat's still with us? College being what it is, I'm quite surprised that you and your roomies didn't bore it to death with log, heartfelt discussions, on existentialism.

I mean really, those long winded "discussions" are apt to cause "concussions".

On a more serious note, does anybody remember the old "CARE" commercials? Those were the good old days, when a pathetic wretch holding on to a stale kaiser roll for dear life still moved me.

  22. And a new totalitarian state is born!!

  23. Thread title:

I guess the Ashes would fall into that catagory then...

  24. +1 for the loss of no wicket.

A healthy first innings lead, Benny.
