Microsoft sends Mozilla another cake for Firefox 4 release

Microsoft has once again sent a congratulatory cake to Mozilla, this time for the release of Firefox 4. This would be the third cake the software giant has sent; it's become a tradition that is celebrated upon major version releases of the open-source browser.

"This is a fine gesture," Frédéric Wenzel, a Mozilla software engineer, said in a statement. "Hat tip to our fellow browser makers in Redmond. Remember: Competition is good for business."

The tradition began in October 2006, when the Internet Explorer 7 development team sent a cake to Mozilla for successful shipping Firefox 2. Given the state of the browser wars at the time, many joked about the cake being poisoned, while others teasingly suggested that Mozilla send a cake back along with the recipe, in reference to the fact that the organization produces open-source software. The IE8 development team sent another cake on June 17, 2008, when Firefox 3 was released.

Mozilla has announced that in 2011, there will be four major releases of its browser. That means that there is still Firefox 5.0, Firefox 6.0, and Firefox 7.0 to come. Firefox 5 is slated for a late June 2011 release. Did Mozilla consider Microsoft's marketing budget when it began planning to change its development cycle?

  1. So you are the one who asked for the patent 1st D: well at least i have a shot for my patent of photos of cakes sightly rotated counter clockwise whit a probable fingered upper left corner on a wooden-like bi color dish!

    Hehe...

Hmm although how to discern between a photo of a cake slightly rotated counter clockwise and one that has been rotated substantially clockwise? Other than that I think the someone else may have already submitted a patent for "CAKE!" which probably covers everything. In fact MS are probably about to get sued for sending "CAKE!".

  2. did they actually eat it? lol

    Hah, that's just pure win!

I think the IE team is very happy for the competition from Firefox, where it not for their battle the IE team would probably be much smaller and not as well funded... (Since they would own 99% of the market then, not counting Chrome but that's much more recent in time)

Still love Opera for its mouse gesture system, but I agree FF has integrated a lot of the nice stylistic elements from Opera. Given that my work requires me to test our online systems with different browsers, checking support for SVG mini/HTML5/Websocket etc I always have the latest versions and beta versions of Opera, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and IE installed and switch between them frequently for general use. Although for personal use I always seem to come back to Opera.

  14. its acually cool.. it will have a prompt every time you want to take a bite it will ask you "are you sure?"

  15. Too bad Microsoft doesn't include their EULA agreement on the cake. :P

  16. Honestly, that melts my heart with joy. That's so sweet <xB

  17. The cake contains nano machines. MS can gain control of whoever eats it.

  18. LOL, it's probably at the bottom of the container or something
