Weekend Open Forum: How many processes are running right now?

Not long ago, it was fairly common for power users to reference Windows' process list as if it were a barometer for the machine's speed. I can recall forum debates between members bragging about how few processes their system ran at startup, and I remember being adamant about ensuring that only essential items were running on my system. In that same vein, it was also common for folks to seek and destroy non-critical Windows services for speed gains.

In an age of hexa-core CPUs, dirt cheap RAM and flash storage, it seems those concerns have faded from enthusiasts' consideration. My relatively modest PC runs north of 100 processes daily (many of which are Chrome tabs) without breaking a sweat and I can increase or decrease that figure by 50 without noticing a difference in usable performance. How many processes are you currently running and do you pay attention to them anymore? Did you ever?

  1. do some of you guys realize that having more tabs open does not affect the amount of process running? I am running 100 right now. I think a bunch is from the applications that are on my G19 keyboard! I love this thing! I can watch youtube videos on my keyboard!

Well, I certainly do. This I mentioned in post #49.

When you said "keyboard", at first I thought you meant a musical instrument. If pianos had video screens, nobody would ever practice.

  3. Processes 29 - i try to terminate some, it still annoys me to see those unwanted background processes.

  4. i have 37 just ........................37

Chrome creates a new process for each tab.

  6. 97 for me. But I am on a notebook, which have some of annoying drivers running all the time e.g. touch pad, some HP cloud **** (which I usually terminate) + LS + FPR + IRS and Two sets of Graphic drivers i.e. Intel HD + ATI Catalyst etc. Also I noted that FF plug-in container now creates separate process.

Just in case here is the picture as well :p

  7. 60 with chrome open, but I also have rainmeter, rocketdock and MSI Afterburner running constantly, unlike the 'old' days, this has no effect on my system whatsover.

  8. 97 and using 1.42GB/3.00GB of RAM

  9. 71 now.

    23 proc

u dont really need more than that

No sh!t, win 95? Care to mention what those 23 are?

  11. 45 processes right now...but never pay attention to them nowadays

  12. 67, which would have driven me crazy back when I was on XP with 2 gigs of DDR memory. With 8 gigs of DDR 3... doesn't phase my system and I'm only using about 1 gig of what I've got. I still want to knock down some of the useless processes, but I haven't bothered to check them since they don't really bog down the system.

  13. 70 Processes

  14. 48 atm

I hate useless things using CPU time

  15. 48 with iTunes nad Firefox loaded, 1.11GB vram.

  16. Average about 35

  17. 65

i could kill a few if it bothered me, keyboard/mouse/phone software, but im not on xp anymore so why bother

  18. About 48 & i never pay attention to it.

  19. 26 runing and alls well

  20. Well if I turn everything I want to you off (I have an Asus Crosshair IV, It comes with alot of start up options!) then I can get as low as 52, but with Firefox open and all the rest of the stuff I use it sits around 64 Proccesses

  21. Damn good weekend question. I'm running 57 right now. And I know I can shut down quite a few of those. In fact...leave me alone, I'm working on this.

  22. 101 now (2 Firefox and 1 Opera)

  23. 57 at the moment. I go to about 75 on a busy day.

  24. 92 right now with 25 of those processes belonging to Chrome.

  25. Currently sitting at 70, I tend to not over think it as much as I used to but still keep an eye on it from time to time. On my older systems I'm more prudent however.
