Weekend Open Forum: Have you met anyone famous?

Facebook and the University of Milan conducted a study earlier this year to determine the validity of the “six degrees of separation” concept – that each person on the planet is only six steps away, by way of introduction, from anyone else. You know, the whole “friend of a friend” bit. The study concluded that users of the social networking site are actually only separated by 4.74 degrees.

Modern communication and transportation methods make it easier than ever for individuals to get out and meet others. In fact, it’s highly likely that you’ve even met someone of significance in your lifetime – perhaps a former president, music artist, philantropist, influential businessman, actor or pro athlete.

I’ve met a few noteworthy people in my relatively short lifetime. I bumped into comedian Jay Leno at a monthly car show during a vacation to Los Angeles several years ago. While in college at the University of Mississippi I had the opportunity to meet eventual New York Giants quarterback and eventual Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning. During that same year I lived in the athletic dorm next door to one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met – current San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis.

Whoever it is for you, we want to hear about it in this week’s Weekend Open Forum!

  1. I once shook Pee Wee Herman's hand outside a porno theater.

How did you get out of that sticky situation?

  3. Besides me no, there's no other famous people more important than me so who gives a **** about them.

  4. I grew up on Long Island, New York in a village named Northport. Harry Chapin was friends with our next-door neighbor, and one night while I was playing at their house he came to dinner when I was about 12 years old. I also went to school with Billy Joel's then stepson, Sean Small and my sister had the same babysitter that Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley used, whose name was Dawn.

  5. Had drinks with bill Murray (and his mother) in my little town in Kansas..... Apparently he likes our gulf course. Cool guy real nice

Wichita gulf is nice, but I prefer the bay.....

  7. Burl Ives.. You know, the husky voice narrator of Rudolph the Red nose reindeer fame... I had dinner with him in 1977 at a Boy Scout Jamboree

He's a singer too! Surely you've heard, "Holly Jolly Christmas"?

  10. I've met in no particular order: Robert F. Kennedy, Sandy Baron, **** Clark, Harvey Keitel, Ed McMahon, Spike Lee, George Benson, Peter Brown, Sharon Stone, Al Sharpton, Cissy Houston, Susan Sarandon, Elliot Gould, **** Gregory, Ollie Woodson, Mark Gastineau, Ed Kranepool, Don Clendenon, Bobby Murcer, Lew Alcinder, Gilbert Gottfried, and David Patterson. I'm sure there's more but that's all I can think of right now. Some I've held good conversations with while others I just shook their hand, smiled and made nice!

  11. I met Gonzo from the Arizona Diamond backs world series champion team when I worked at burger king in the drive through. He only had 100$% bills and drove a hummer. I did not recognize him and told him we don't take 100's so he left and never mentioned who he was. When he was driving away I was like oh shit thats gonzo! The people behind him ran to his car and got a auto graph.

  12. I met Nelson Mandela back in the 90s in Atlanta and comedian George Burns on a flight to hawaii

  13. I've met quite a few assassins, exterminators, cleaners and hitmen, not to mention their support teams(recon squads, assault teams, etc.) They prefer to remain anonymous and invincible, so if you drag them out from the cold... you get a broken wrist for starters...

  14. I met someone famous every day I wake up and look in the mirror ..

  15. Had a two hour breakfast with Jerry Van **** in a hotel... sad guy.

  16. A few but I'm guessing at a convention doesn't count.

  17. I think it would count if you actually met them and not just saw them.

  18. I used to be the Operations Manager for a major airline at SeaTac International Airport. Because of that, I met a slew of celebrities - pro athletes, movie stars, politicians, you name it. During my 20 years in the military I also met 3 U.S. President's and a number of high-ranking foreign politicians.

    Didn't do me any good - I'm still broke...LOL. :p

  19. met one or two famous people, but my best is the XO of HMS conquerer, who sank the belgrano in falklands.

  20. I went to an occupy wallstreet protest and saw anne hathaway standing right next to me. I wanted to say something buy my jaw dropped instead

  21. pres. nelson mandela

  22. A couple of years ago, at our company's Christmas party in Santa Fe, NM, I met and had drinks with Liam Neeson. Very cool guy. While I was in the Navy, during the filming of "the Hunt for Red October," Sean Connery joined us in our office for a couple of hours. Another cool guy.
