Browsing the web on a typical day I tend to amass a ridiculous amount of open tabs, whether related to something I'm working on or stuff that caught my eye and I want to check in a while -- but don't necessarily want to bookmark or save to Instapaper. Right now I have a modest 12 open, but it gets much worse on occasions, especially since I don't use any kind of tab manager and rarely open things in a new window.
How about you: How many tabs do you keep open on average and how many are open right now? Feel free to share any add-ons or tips you have to manage browser tabs.
I don't really believe most of you. I have 2 now, but windows seems to slow to a crawl just having 2 or 3 windows in use even with 2 gig of memory. How much memory do you have?
DDR3 is cheap. I have 8GB of 1333 RAM in my laptop which I upgraded from the default 4GB. I replaced the 2x2GB with 2x4GB. It cost me $50 with tax and shipping from NCIX. I am building a new gaming computer and plan to overkill the RAM with 16GB, it will cost me $140 for high performance 2133 RAM.

8, but I plan on closing 6 soonish, as they are things like iPlayer and such and such.
58. just kidding, i usually have 1 because i close it when im done
5 on this window + 4 on the other.
Chrome as main browser = usually 10.
FF as secondary = 5-10 tabs for forum.
Occasionally 3-5 tabs at IE 9 for quick searching and browsing like this.
I'd say around 200, but that's work, at home probably 500+.
5+
The people who say 50+ just wtf are your tabs?! Pardon me, I'm just intrigued. And porn doesn't count.
I seldom have less than 50 open, probably closer to 100. With Firefox, you can group your tabs and change the settings so that only the tabs you click on are loaded - out of the 100 tabs, I probably only have about 10 that are using resources.
It looks like "bookmarks" are now something like "archive" and many people just leave the pages they want to remember opened.
Eight on Chrome and one on Internet explorer.I try not to open more than ten tabs.
One. This is my homepage.
6
I've got three open, but I often have upwards from 7 open.
If bookmarks offered the same convenience as opened tabs I might have used them, but open tabs are a lot more accessible (at least in Firefox, where I use tab groups and multiple tab rows). I miss BarTab, which would unload a tab after a period of inactivity. That doesn't work in modern Firefox, so I close it occasionally and reopen in order to lower the number of active tabs.
416 with FIrefox, but I'm bad of closing my tabs
Closing tabs is like taking out the trash... too much hassle.
3 at the moment.
Just to give an example how my tabs accumulate:
I regularly read gmail, and I like having iGoogle open to check on my feeds. I have the main Steam Gifts page and the forum page open, as well as the GOG forum, the Double Fine Adventure forum and the Wasteland 2 forum. I have the Kickstarter pages for Spate and Jane Jensen open because they're the active ones I'm interested in. Trent Oster's twitter might have something interesting about the Baldur's Gate remake, so what not keep it open? Actually it's kind of boring, so I might close it one day. I keep Stop Forwarding That Crap To Me on YouTube open because I enjoy listening to it occasionally. I have Cucumber Quest open because the Kickstarter introduced me to that and it's fun, and I should continue reading it sometime. I have the Lineage II site open because there's a problem there preventing me from getting the anniversary gift and I need to follow up on that before it expires.
And so on. A lot of times tabs get left behind which aren't relevant, so I'll delete them if I come across them (I deleted a group of 14 tabs while writing this), but basically anything I want to check on later on I keep as a tab.
17 at the moment, and most of those are the ones I left open when I shut down the laptop before going home for the weekend! Though I would say that's pretty standard for me...

2 right now. Normally run somewhere between 2-10. If I am researching a problem or comparison shopping I will get up into the 20's or 30's.
12!
12, 11 if you don't count the 'Downloads' tab.
Wow. How much RAM is that using?
I don't perceive hundreds of tabs open as being that unusual. Shopping in a half dozen different vectors, for a dozen different items with comparisons. Multiple forum tabs, in multiple forums, left unattended, or waiting for replies. A couple of Email accounts, and last, but not least, a couple hundred examples of art and erotic photography.
Of course my normal internet machine only has 1.5GB of memory, so it's fairly easy to "hit the wall", so to speak.
If it wasn't DDR, and I didn't have to buy 2 sticks of at least 500GB to get to the deuce, in a 7+ year old computer, I might do something about it.
