Weekend Open Forum: What's the oldest part in your PC?
Although most of us upgrade our systems regularly, it's generally uncommon to replace every single component -- even for a fresh build. Instead, parts less crucial to daily performance such as optical drives, bulk storage, cases or even power supplies are recycled over the years, serving tours through several hardware generations. Likewise with peripherals, which often remain deployed until they're busted or totally obsolete.
This week, we want to hear about the parts of your PC that have been on duty for the longest period. On my end, I think the Thermaltake Tai Chi chassis is the oldest component still in use (it's also my most regretted tech purchase), having been bought in 2005. As close second and third place picks, I recently removed a decade old 40GB Maxtor hard drive and a floppy drive from my system, though they weren't actually being used.

Creative 2.1 speakers, march 2006, defective potentiometer from day one, but never bothered to have it repaired or replaced due to lousy warranty terms, and now I'm kinda stuck with them. I use headphones anyway.

It's probably my Auzentech X-Median soundcard or watercooling gear bought sometime in 2006. However most parts in my main PC are from around 2007: Maximus Formula mainboard, 8800GTS graphics card, Corsair PSU & OCZ RAM where all bought in November 07...
My most recent item is probably my Cheetah 15K.7 300GB SAS2 harddrive, bought in October 2010. I was looking at SSD's but their prices and amongst all number of issues kept me away, I just wanted something that worked & it sure has

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro bought on December 2005, it's been on 4 different motherboards now. Haven't found a worthy succesor for that card yet!
Next are the speakers, Logitech Z-5500 from January 2007. Best PC speakers out there until last year's Z906 release, which I will get when/if they die ^^.

Probably the punched-card reader from the Analytical Engine module.
But seriously folks... actually it's the speakers, which are an ancient pair of Philips "Hi-Fi" speakers from the '70s, which I modified to be a pair of powered stereo guitar-practice amps in about 1982, and they still work fine!

My speakers, Logitech Z5300 5.1 paid $200 for them about 7 years ago and still kicking like new. The rest is 2012 parts. i7@4.5, 16gb ddr3, GTX 680 4GB, 30" 2560 x 1600 IPS display.

My case and Powerbox from 2003.
Replaced my PSU in 2008 but it blew in 6 month so went back to my old trusty and stayed ever since.

Well I've built my computer november of 2010 with i7 960 that I got from Intel retail edge, so I've bought everything new then, but I do have several computer parts at home, like a Pentium 2 processor, 56k modem, 15" CRT monitor, several memory ram sticks etc

Soundblaster Live 5.1 Platinum has been following all my rigs for the past decade with kX drivers. Sadly might be the last mobo it comes in contact (no PCI in my next rig).

The oldest part of my PC is the speakers. Everything else is within two years old.
I have items that I'm keeping for sentimental reasons. lol

I upgrade once every couple of years so everything is pretty new. I guess my power supply is the oldest - it's been through a couple of upgrades. It's a Thermaltake 850 watt modular one. Runs like a champ!

It's funny that this article should come up this weekend. A couple of days ago I installed an old hdd to see if I could access it with a Dos virtual box. It was the first hdd I ever bought. 85.3mb manufactured in 91. And for those who did a double take mb is correct.
After too many hours with Google searches I was finally able to read from the drive. Who else remembers Ascii art.... lol. -
