  Windows XP Memory Tweak Guide

Page File Defragmentation

File fragmentation is a source of performance degradation in the PC environment. Running Windows’ Disk Defragmenter helps resolve fragmentation when run regularly. Surprisingly though, Windows’ Disk Defragmenter is unable to defragment the Page File, Registry and other exclusively accessed files. In order to do this you need to use a third party utility, such as Sysinternal’s System File Defragmenter.

(Update: Sysinternal was acquired by Microsoft, URL to the utility has been edited. Thank you Oskar).

Run at regular intervals this will alleviate performance degradation associated with fragmentation of the Page File, Registry, etc. Note – With certain commercial Defragmenters you will be able to move the Page File to a more optimal location of the Hard Drive, e.g. Diskkeeper Retail.

Final Thoughts

At this stage you should have successfully optimised your Windows memory subsystem, yielding optimal loading times/performance and best use of available resources. If you seek further information on this topic, be sure to check our Windows OS Forum.
