Tribes 2 Tweak Guide

Welcome to Tribes 2, where only superior teamwork and cunning tactics will ensure your Tribe's survival. With unprecedented innovations to team-based play & in-game communications, massive multi-player support (60+ players) & new vehicles & weapons, Tribes 2 is the ultimate team-based action experience.

This guide will take you through every Game option, hopefully showing you how to sort out errors you've been receiving, getting performance up on a wide variety of Graphics Cards, improving Audio quality & more. Read on.

Troubleshooting

Keeping Tribes 2 up-to-date is fairly simply affair, merely launch the Tribes 2 Online version of the game & it will automatically download the latest available version. Should you have problems with this process then try installing the latest check your Auto-Update feature.

Begin by downloading the latest drivers for your Graphics card & Soundcard. This may solve (some) display or audio problems you might encounter. There are links to various manufacturers on the Drivers page.

Install DirectX 8.0A, or later, on your system if not already installed – DirectX 8.0A is also included on the game CD (Although DirectX 8.1 will be available soon). This can fix problems with Sound & Input devices, or Display issues if you are using Direct3D rendering. It may also improve performance, although this may vary depending on how well your drivers are optimized for DirectX 8.

If you experience static noise or irregular audio playback, try the following (assuming that installing the latest drivers don’t fix the problems):

1.       Click on Start, Settings, then Control Panel. If you have Windows 2000 or Millennium Edition installed note the icon names as shown in brackets below.

2.       Open the Multimedia (Sounds & Multimedia) icon.

3.       Select the Audio tab & then hit the Advanced Properties (Advanced) button.

4.       Select the Performance tab.

5.       Move the Hardware acceleration slider to the 2nd notch from the left (Basic Acceleration). Move the Sample rate conversion quality slider to the middle notch (Improved sample rate converter).

If you are having problems running the game (Performance or otherwise) on Windows 2000 then try checking our Windows 2000 Compatibility & Performance guide.

If you experience any lockups & such they might be caused by overclocking, if so try lowering the clock speed of the overclocked device. Tribes 2 is very resource intensive & as such can be quite sensitive to overclocking.

Still having problems? Contact Sierra Tech Support.

Config file

Tribes 2 stores your settings data in the ClientPrefs.cs file. This file is located in the GameData\base\prefs of where you installed Tribes 2, e.g. D:\Tribes2\GameData\base\prefs. Please remember this as later on in this guide you may need to edit the contents of this file.

Graphics

Load tribes 2, select Launch, Settings then the Video tab.

Video Driver. Select your Rendering API here as appropriate – OpenGL or Direct3D. For the majority of Users OpenGL will provide best performance/visual quality. Although if you experience problems using one try using the other instead. It may well be worth trying out both API's here though & see which works out best for you.

If you have a 3dfx Graphics card installed (still) then it is strongly recommended you install & use the Megabyte WickedGL & select OpenGL as your Video driver (It has better Tribes 2 support than the existing 3dfx OpenGL Driver).

Should you find that Direct3D or OpenGL is missing from the drop-down menu here you can enable their selection by Editing the following lines in your ClientPrefs.cs;

$pref::Video::allowD3D = "x";. Set x to 1 to enable Direct 3D as a selectable rendering, 0 disables this appearing as an option.

$pref::Video::allowOpenGL = "x";. Set x to 1 to enable OpenGL as a selectable rendering, 0 disables this appearing as an option.

NOTE – Should you find that the GUI displays corrupted visuals (Essentially unreadable garbage) ALT-TAB out of the game & close it. Ensure that your Desktop colour depth is the same as the game colour depth you have selected. This should fix the corruption.
